So I made my friend’s wedding cake two weeks ago. And the tiers are two different flavors. But the bottom one is basically Emmrich’s hazelnut sponge. The chocolate ganache was used to layer alongside coffee band vanilla Bavarian creams. It was so delicious. But it’s so hard to find that many raw hazelnuts!
I made the torte for my sisters birthday! She likened it to a Ferrero Rocher praline and I would have to agree

Rook paused as he entered the dining hall, catching the scent of something sugary on the air. He moved towards the kitchen area where Lucanis appeared to be preparing dinner.
"Is it your turn to make dinner tonight?" Rook asked. "It smells wonderful. What did you make?"
"Paella," the assassin replied with a warm smile. "Well, two, one without seafood for Emmrich."
Rook chuckled softly, "You are so thoughtful, mon amour. Emmrich will appreciate that." He tilted his head and sniffed, the air redolent with a lovely sweet scent. "What else am I smelling?"
"There's a hazelnut torte for desert," Lucanis replied, gazing at Rook as he spoke. "It pairs nicely with coffee."
"You made hazelnut torte, for me?" Rook looked surprised.
"There's enough for everyone," Lucanis protested, but Rook could see a pleased gleam in his eye.
"You made my favorite desert, to go with my favorite drink," Rook informed him, reaching out to take Lucanis's hand in his own. "Thank you. It's been a long time since anyone's done anything like that for me."

So, I just found out that they actually put in the game the recipe for the hazelnut torte Lucanis’ makes for Rook.
It sounds legit and delicious.

Wow. It's been awhile since my last post, but Stories Behind Food is back!
As you probably know, Thanksgiving is right around the corner (tomorrow!) and unfortunately, I'm not able to spend it with family and friends because I just live too far away. It's sad really. Campus seems empty and it's very disheartening. However, I don't want to dampen your holiday spirits, because it's Thanksgiving-- the holiday that revolves around food!
So one of my friends and I decided to start early with the holiday festivities by perusing the internet for some recipes that we could somehow muster up in a short amount of time. After awhile, we managed to come across Ilan, an 18 year old Canadian blogger, and his recipe for Hazelnut Torte. As you probably know, I am a sucker for sweet things, so my friend and I definitely tried to recreate his recipe.
The result? Obviously fantastic! 5 stars! I mean, look at that photo (and let me tell you, we're amateurs at best)!
What's interesting about this dessert is that the torte is not your typical vanilla and rose. There's chives --yes, the onion's relative-- in there with the raspberries. You would think it would only work with a Worcestershire sauce, but it actually works well in dessert form too.
The cake layers are made with hazelnut dacquoise, which is very similar in texture to the French Macaroons. The raspberry-chive layers were such a pain to do. However, the raspberry gelatin worked well with the chive-infused pastry cream, which added a slight, piquant undertone to the cake. The hazelnut flavor went so well with the freshness of the raspberries. The hazelnut nougatine, we figured, would be an added bonus. It became the crunch that this dessert needed.
Definitely going to keep this one for the books! Happy Thanksgiving!
