“I just thought…”  Dickon gestured to the sprawling garden.  “I thought maybe you’d be less gloomy if you could see something this pretty.”

“Maybe I like being gloomy,” replied the spectral girl, but her smile betrayed her.  As far as ghosts went, she was a reasonable sort; she didn’t want to drive Dickon to an early grave or avenge her own death, just to hang around and be sulky.  He thought of her less as a spirit from beyond the veil and more as an almost-friend he could have known if things had been different.

“You’re not going to vanish now that I’ve made you smile, are you?  Did you have a job you needed to finish or something?  I don’t want you to go away.”

Mary floated over to a tree and raised her eyebrow.

“I won’t if I can help it!”

You really capture Emily's flighty spirit and huge heart. It's so easy to just write her off as the sensitive ditz, but you bring out that she's so much more than that. :)
