Best Poké Ball Tournament-
Round 1: Match 10
Timer Ball vs Heavy Ball
Timer Ball
Heavy Ball
This matchup has quite the heavy hitters!
First up, the Timer Ball- every legendary Pokémon hunter's best friend. This striking Ball is true to its name- the more time spent in battle, the more effective it gets. Each turn that passes, the multiplier on the Ball increases slightly- going from a measly 1x, to a very good 4x! Initially, the Timer Ball would only max out when it hit turn 30, but from Generation 5, a huge buff meant it only needed to wait until turn 10 for the 4x multiplier! This means it becomes more effective than other reliable choices like the Ultra Ball (after 4 turns) or the Dusk Ball (after 7 turns). For long, drawn out battles, who could ask for a more reliable companion?
The Heavy Ball has the extremely unique feature of being the only Ball out of all variants whose catch rate modifier isn't multiplicative- it's additive. This Ball adds a certain amount to the catch rate based on the weight of the Pokémon species- the higher the weight, the higher the modifier! This could be a -20 modifier for the lightest Pokémon, to a +0, +20, +30, or a +40 for the girthiest of Pokémon! This ultimately makes it a hard Ball to compare to others, as its usefulness will vary wildly based on the species' starting catch rate- if the original rate is the lowest possible- only 3- then that +40 won't be beat by any multiplier out there! But if the Pokémon has a catch rate over 40, then you may as well use an Ultra Ball! Such a unique way of working has caused many glitches over the years, from counting certain Pokémon as much heavier than they are, to outright making catches impossible in certain scenarios. But it's a very interesting specimen, no doubt!

Pokemon Card of the Day #2179: Heavy Ball (BREAKthrough)
Heavy Ball made its return in BREAKthrough with no real changes. It was still an Item that let you search your deck for a Pokemon with a Retreat Cost of 3 or more and put it into your hand. This was less general-purpose than Ultra Ball, but decks that used a lot of Pokemon that met the requirements could use this to find a Pokemon without discarding anything. Vikavolt decks featuring Tapu Bulu-GX were the most likely place to see this, as both of the main Pokemon had that high Retreat Cost. There was also some use to find Garbodor as well as Golisopod-GX and Vileplume. If using it, it was probably good to also have some Ultra Ball alongside Heavy Ball, as basically every deck would still have Pokemon that didn’t work with Heavy Ball. This card was used more as extra help to make sure important Pokemon that could be found by it got into play as soon as possible.
