i know absolutely nothing about science or alchemy. so my first instinct would be to ask him what equipment or materials he needs and then buy those. uranium? you got it bro!!!!!!!!11

for something more giftful, i’d give him a complicated mechanical puzzle box or one of those little mechanisms you can take apart and reassemble. “toy” feels slightly insulting, but basically a toy designed to occupy his big big brain. his room is already full of books, instruments, inventions, fabrics, and other little objects i can't really make out, so another trinket would fit right in i think

i honestly think he’d appreciate anything, though. no one really likes him. he does not have friends. a gift would probably make his day

RAPUNZEL

paint and books are the obvious answers, but i don’t think i’d get her either of those. she spent eighteen years painting, reading, baking, sewing, making candles, playing instruments, doing pottery, and completing every other hobby a person can possibly do indoors. i’d want to give her something that helps her discover an entirely new interest

maybe i’d give her a flower press and a journal. it would give her an excuse to explore. Collect some flowers, learn about unfamiliar places and plant species. she likes to adventure. it is in the title. Or maybe id give her some seeds and a pot. gardening is a hobby she’d probably enjoy. get her some flower siblings. And she can create her own dyes with it!! alternatively, she did like that painting class she did in that one episode. maybe i’d arrange some sort of workshop for her. glassblowing, metalworking, anything she’s never tried before. she seems like the kind of person who would have fun doing new things–like when she tries to create an invention in Great Expotations 🤔

EUGENE

grooming products, probably. Eugene seems like someone who would have an unnecessarily complex routine. If he was in a modern AU, he’d make GRWM videos. fancy soap, cologne, hair products-all that stuf. One of his most prized possessions is a comb. The show really likes to emphasize how important his appearance is to him.

he also likes reading, considering how important the Flynnigan Rider stories were to him growing up, and how he would read to kids in the orphanage… so i’d try to find him a rare edition of one of those books? Maybe like. Signed by the author. then i’d include a beginner’s guide to baking since he seems to be pretty incompetent at that

CASS

a weapon is the obvious answer, but Cass already has plenty of those. and she probably has very specific opinions about what makes a good one. i think she’d appreciate something smaller and more personal instead.

Cass is much more sentimental than she likes to appear. she kept and displayed hubert’s rose-which i don’t necessarily interpret as romantic… it could just as easily be a souvenir from the time she successfully outsmarted and arrested a high-profile criminal. Part of her goal IS to prove herself as competent. and she kept the Cassandrium necklace Varian made for her, even when she eventually left Corona. she clearly holds on to small objects that remind her of important people or moments (e.g. the music box from her childhood)

because of that, maybe i’d give her a keepsake box for all the things she finds important. either that, or like. a simple accessory/trinket. a nice little gift. any gift with even a little bit of thought put into it would probably be appreciated by her, likely due to mommy issues

HUGO

hugo is an artificer, so i’m convinced the perfect gift for him would be a strange magical artifact. something old and complicated enough that he can spend several weeks taking it apart and trying to understand it

honestly, it wouldn’t even need to be valuable. the mystery would be the real gift. i think he’s the type of person who would be much more excited by an unidentified piece of ancient technology than by something normal and functional. give him some weird little object that hums when you touch it and tell him nobody has been able to open it. he’d be occupied immediately. He likes little mysteries. he likes to figure things out. it stimulates his genius brain, much like Varian.

i could also give him any intricate piece of machinery and he’d probably also enjoy it. Let me pull up in an automaton. If, in this situation, i am allowed to bring things from my time period into his–i would give him a phone. or microwave. Or something. i think he’d geek out. if Hugo doesn't already have a gun, i will give him one.

besides that, in my personal opinion, he likes animals. I think he is a big animal lover. I mean, one of his most important creations is an enchanted mechanical mouse. he could have made anything, and chose to make a mouse. i think i could give him a lizard or something and he’d probably cherish it for the rest of its waking moments. He’d name it Ophelia or something.

LANCE

this one’s a little difficult, because the writers of TTS were apparently very determined not to give lance any meaningful character traits.

the few major defining traits he does have are being a father figure and being a cook. although, judging by his design, and his tendency to primarily steal fancy decorative items(iirc). a nice set of gold jewelry could actually be a decent gift for him

he already wears a lot of gold accents: the gold earring, the gold chain or necklace thing, and the details on his clothes. he’d probably appreciate something gold and unnecessarily fancy

or, since things from other kingdoms would be much less accessible in his era, i could also give him a book of recipes from different kingdoms, or some rare ingredients he could experiment with. something exotic that he normally wouldn’t be able to find in Corona

hair serum could probably do him some good. or maybe a pet, because why is he the only one out of Cass, Eugene, Rapunzel, and Varian who doesn’t have one?

alternatively, i’d get him a new set of fancy clothes, because why is he also the only one out of Cass, Eugene, Rapunzel, and Varian who DOESN'T GET a new design in season three? EVEN CATALINA AND KIERA GET NEW DESIGNS 😭😡

NURU

of course, since Vat7K is only a concept and there is practically ZERO canonical content for Nuru, the best thing i can imagine she’d like is… you guessed it! something STAR-related!!!!

otherwise, this is all going to be based purely on personal headcanons.

since nuru is the group’s navigator, i think she’d appreciate a nice astrolabe, compass, or some other elaborate navigational instrument. maybe an entire cartography set, with tools for measuring distances, blank journals for recording routes, and a sturdy case to keep all her maps in. something both pretty and genuinely useful

i could also give her a telescope, a celestial globe, or one of those mechanical models that shows how different planets and celestial bodies move (though, im not sure people in this time period had a solid concept of how space and other planets worked) i feel like she’d enjoy having something she can examine and fiddle with rather than just another decorative star-themed object–although she would probably appreciate one of those too. her design already has star and pearl accessories, so a piece of jewelry is a very easy answer

another idea would be a collection of books about the astronomy, constellations, and navigation methods of different kingdoms. since she’s also supposed to act as a diplomat, i like to imagine she’d be interested in learning how different cultures interpret the same stars. each kingdom could have its own names, stories, and legends for them.

i think she’d also appreciate a journal. This isn’t me trying to directly rip-off Rapunzel, but Nuru does seem like the most likely person (besides Varian?) to record their quest in a journal. also, since she’s a black girl, i feel like she’d genuinely appreciate some good hair care items–things like oils, combs, wraps, or protective accessories. considering how much time they’d be spending traveling, she does need to learn how to do her own hair (something i doubt she previously did on her own)

Besides that, i also think her or Yong deserve their own animal companion. all good main/supporting characters get a pet sidekick. This is TTS law.

YONG

as an aspiring pyrotechnician and the group’s resident healer–according to me because i said so–Yong would probably appreciate an apothecary kit. i’m thinking a little case filled with labelled bottles, a mortar and pestle, bandages, medicinal herbs, burn salves, and whatever else he might need to patch someone up after one of them probably activates a trap and almost dies for the eleventeenth time (in The Alchemist Returns AND Be Very Afraid, Varian almost dies to traps like FIFTY MILLION TIMES. conceptually, having to be medically treated by a 7th grader because you tripped onto a pressure plate and activated an ancient death trap mechanism is really funny)

i could also give him a book about medicinal plants. along with a journal where he can document his own remedies. i feel like he’d really enjoy experimenting with how different ingredients react with each other, especially if some of them can also be incorporated into his fireworks. healing people and blowing things up are basically just two very different forms of chemistry!

obviously, i’d also get him pyrotechnic supplies. but perhaps not simply hand this small, excitable child an unrestricted box of explosives. maybe some rare powders that create cool colours. or firework casings. idk.

actually, safety equipment might be the most useful gift possible. fire-resistant gloves, protective goggles, a durable apron with lots of pockets, anything fire retardant. and a medical satchel he can carry around with him. he might initially interpret that as me having no faith in his abilities, but. i would interpret it as wanting him to survive long enough to further develop those abilities.

or i could give him some sort of portable firework launcher that he can decorate himself. would that be responsible? no. would it immediately become his favourite possession? Absolutely. Hugo gets a gun? so does Yong!

THE BROTHERHOOD

the idea that we have roughly as much information about the Brotherhood as we do about the Vat7K characters (characters who are practically nonexistent) is actually abysmal

anyway. Quirin likes farming, Hector likes animals, and Adira likes exploring and adventuring, presumably. those are basically the crumbs we have been given, so i will be forced to improvise.

Quirin

for Quirin, i could get him something related to farming. maybe a set of high-quality tools, some rare seeds from another kingdom, or a book about different agricultural techniques. he seems like the sort of person who would prefer a practical gift that he can actually use rather than something purely decorative

however, in my personal headcanon, Quirin also knows how to play an instrument. i like to think that Varian’s weird guitar-trumpet came from him somehow. that it’s actually a traditional Dark Kingdom instrument. or at least Varian's homemade attempt at recreating one

because of that, i could also give Quirin an instrument. alternatively, i could give him a book of traditional Dark Kingdom songs, assuming any copies survived. or! A book of traditional Dark Kingdom recipes. Contrary to popular belief, i think Quirin can cook Some Things. it would be something personal that connects him to his old home.

Hector

Hector is surrounded by animals. he rides a rhinoceros and has those two little binturong fellas following him around, so clearly the horrifyingly and violent warrior has a soft spot for his pets. He is so cute and would clearly never hurt a fly

i’d get him something for them, like a grooming kit, custom saddlery for his rhino, or a collection of. treats? from different kingdoms. maybe a giant animal bed.

i could also give him a bestiary about rare and dangerous creatures. he seems like the kind of person who would enjoy learning how to approach an enormous vicious beast, either because he wants to befriend it or because he wants to fight it

honestly, the safest option would be to give the gifts directly to his animals. i don’t know what Hector wants, but i bet he loves his fur-babies (sorry for ever using that term)

Adira

Adira spends most of her time wandering around, appearing in random locations without warning, giving people cryptic advice, and then disappearing before they can ask any follow-up questions. so i’d give her something useful for travelling.

maybe a really detailed set of maps, a durable compass, a weatherproof journal, or a cloak with a bunch of hidden pockets.

or i could just give her a proper camping set. she has apparently been roaming the wilderness for decades, and yet i don’t think we ever see her carrying any supplies. where does she sleep? what does she eat? does she own a bag? Adira, please explain literally anything about yourself

You asked so you shall receive!! Varian and brother hood art trust. I refuse to draw Edmund because I just can not fathom drawing a build like that (twink artist allert unfortunately) but under cut I have all my thoughts on Varians relationship with the brotherhood and Edmund

Varian and Edmund: They arnt very close but Edmund adores Varian as Quirin's son. They don't talk on their own unless they are put together in a group setting, overall they are just. . Not close uncle and nephew vibes. Edmund loves hearing about Varian and watching him grow and learn, and was more than happy to welcome Varian and his friends into the DK during VAT7K

Varian and Hector: the closest hobby wise, they both have a very strange closeness with wilderness animals. Hectors Bearcats ADORE Varian, he's one of the few people they won't kill on sight if Varian playfully messes with Hector. They don't see each other an absolute ton, but Hector always comes around for holidays and birthdays and they exchange letters constantly.

Hector is very protective over Varian and judges Hugo like CRAZY when Vari first brings him home. He teaches Varian the basics of self defence and is the one who teaches him once Varian becomes interested in archery

Adira and Varian: Adira is the person Varian is closest with in the Brotherhood, she's the type of aunt that Varian can tell things that he doesn't want to tell his own father (things like the details of his time in prison or secret projects he's working on.) they are closest personality wise and love gossiping and exchanging embarrassing story's about Quirin. Adira doesn't like staying in place long but she always makes a point to come home once or twice a year to spend time with her favorite nephew.

She is the one who saw Varian off at the beginning of his VAT7K journey (travelled with him to the border line or Corona and taught him how to live on his own before letting him go on his own) she shows up a few time during his adventure to pull him out of sticky situations but trusts him to do good on his own. She waits at the great tree with Hector to see him before he goes to the dark kingdom trial (am not at this point in VAT7K yet so sorry if this info is wrong LMAO I'm. Assuming they go thru the great tree)

I haven't even met hector in the show yet I'm on season 2 ep 8
