the way they crowd around the purse, eager and bright-eyed, is reminiscent of a time not too long ago — just as they did around the safe in a vegas hotel room, the thieves await a grand unveiling as they work it open. though they’ve already scored a major victory by getting away with the bets from the derby itself, this is a prize that they’ve been waiting to see; they want to hold one of the world’s largest flawless diamonds in their hands. call it a celebration of a job well done.

there’s just one problem: there’s no diamond.

in its place sits a plastic version, like something out of a kid’s toy treasure chest. the fake diamond is just as large as the real one, taunting them, and underneath it lies another note.
