“Ma’falon! Higher this time,” he calls out to her, pulling back the string of the bow. “Min’elvyr!” She laughs as she raises her staff, pulls the magic into her fist. Channeling it through the wood, down the very cracks of it, focusing it through the crystal. Three chunks of ice spit high up into the sky, each taking a different trajectory.
“How’s that for easy!” She shouts, cupping a hand around her mouth, voice travelling over the field to him. A grin on his face as he looses one, another, and another. All three find their mark, the center of the ice, shattering them into a thousand sparkling pieces.
“Min’elvyr,” Mahanon says again, turning back to face her, the bow falling to his side. Self-assured in his smile, confident in his walk back up to the battlements, and to her.
“You’re cheating,” she says the moment his face appears. He laughs, takes the last two steps in one, and leans against the battlements, same as her. Staff rests beside bow, a quiver of arrows at their feet.
“And how exactly am I cheating?” Hela makes a muted, mumbling noise, shrugs her shoulders. His arms crossed, he tips himself over, the side of his head resting on the top of hers. “You’re just sour because I won our bet,” he says. Hands flying upwards, shooing him away from her, she moves to the other side of the battlements with a grin.
“I’ll get you back,” she says. His grin turns into a grimace.
“It better not involve Sera. Dealing with one of you is bad enough, I’m afraid what the two of you together might come up with,” he says.
“Something awful, I’m sure,” with the same sort of self-assurance he held earlier. He pushes himself away from the wall, to her side, looks over into Skyhold’s courtyard. His eyebrows rise when he spots the figure making their way towards them.
“Speaking of Sera,” he says, casting a glance towards Hela. She waves down at Sera, pleased pink in her cheeks, a delighted smile on her lips. Mahanon looks between the both of them, straightens his stance, and then wraps an arm around Hela’s waist. He tips her back, folds with her, both of their faces disappearing below the battlements, where Sera can’t see them.
Hela holds onto his shoulders for dear life as he asks her, “Do you think she’ll fall for it?” Hela raises her eyebrows.
“With the way you look at Dorian? Not a chance.”

“It’s cold here,” Hela comments, padding her feet along the stone bridge connecting the harsh mountainside to the looming castle before them, finally having reached their destination after seeing it grow and grow before their eyes as they traveled from where he’d met her in the forests of Ferelden through wooded paths alongside the mountains and finally up the slopes and across snow.
Cold. As though the two cousins hadn’t been trudging through ice and snowfall for days, feet clad only in the cloth footwraps of their clan, steadfast and unyielding through winter terrain but this bridge is “cold.”
“It’s warmer at Skyhold,” Fenrir tells her, and she doesn’t ask why. Of course she doesn’t. In a time where Tevinter magisters rise from the dead and demons walk the land and her cousin carries a mark on her hand that’s the only power capable of closing the entrances from their world to the next, why wouldn’t a castle high up in the snowy Frostbacks be warm? Of course it is.
When they finally reach the end of the bridge and cross the great gate into the courtyard of the keep, she finds that it is, in fact, warm. A light breeze—so different from the icy winds that had pelted at them for most of their journey—tickles the green grasses at her feet, rustles the bronze and red and gold leaves of the trees that grew along the stone walls of the castle, and any snow squalls that had peppered their travels seem far away and nonexistent under the gentle rays of daytime sunlight.
“What do you think?” he asks her, watching as she takes in the massive towers, the formidable ramparts dotted with soldiers and guards running errands or simply making their rounds for the afternoon. The yard before them bustles with troops and recruits training, sharpening their weapons, conversing amicably as scouts and agents crisscross the grounds carrying scrolls and books and important messages to different parts of the keep. She has no words, and he chuckles. “You’ll have plenty of time to find your answer,” he tells her when she grins at him, starry-eyed but still wordless, “because I have a lot of people I want you to meet in the meantime.”

My Ko-fi Moodboard for @daydreamingdragonage, a dear and encouraging friend. I picked Hela because her “disaster bisexual” mystique is so cool, and it made creating this a joy. I hope you like it, friend! Thank you for being you!

I want to hear more about some specific Hela and Fenrir shenanigans!
Oh, thank you, Anon, for asking!
Here are some young Hela and Fenrir Lavellan shenanigans!
1) When they were pretty young, around age 6, Hela told this ridiculous tale about a monster in the forest to the other children, saying it had to be true, her father was a hunter and told her so. She called it the Nevernear and it would make a cackling noise before it pounced. When the other children asked Fenrir if she was lying, he backed her up, like he always did, adding in more details, like that it would tickle children who caught its eye, then Hela adding that it loved the color green (which, y’know, was a common color in Dalish clothing).
Several of the children started refusing to wear green and Hela once scared a couple of them by sneaking up and making a cackling noise. Once their parents got wind of it, they had to apologize and recant, but they weren’t overly sincere. It didn’t stop them from trying a similar gambit the next year.
2) Oh, once they both got their magic, oh goodness, the trouble they got into. They would often sneak out of their aravel and practice or set up some prank. Most nights their parents would catch them (Solana, Fenrir’s mom, would make them come inside). Aegirthorn (Hela’s father) would usually just secretly follow them and make sure they didn’t get into too much mischief.
One time they weren’t caught, Hela accidentally set her hair on fire, before Fenrir put it out with some summoned snow. She was trying to learn how to juggle and she thought it was a good idea to juggle with fire to start, like the human juggler they met while trading with Fenrir’s mother. Her hair had to be cropped down after that, but she said it was worth it.
3) One incident was when they decided to move the Fen’harel statue each night in front of a certain person’s aravel (someone they didn’t like - the person was rude) and leaving ‘wolf tracks’ around. They managed this for a couple weeks before they were found out. They had to do a lot of chores after that one. (This also added to the fact that some clan members called Hela “blessed/cursed of Fen’Harel” - since it was known that she was often the instigator.)
4) One Fenrir led shenanigan was that when he was 12 and used his magic to leave penis shaped icicles around the camp. Like, just phallic enough to look like a penis, but also vague enough to possibly be natural? Hela was delighted and would spend the winter mornings trying to find all the dicks (it became a challenge - he started hiding them). When one of the clan member complained publicly about at the dicks, their plot was revealed when both Hela and Fenrir started laughing. They weren’t punished for it, since it was harmless, but the side-eye they got from their grandmother made them stop…or at least be more discrete.
