18. Red wine stained lips for ZevWarden? GIVE ME THOSE FEELS!!! Please.
Flesh has pulled away from its mouth. Decaying rot swarms about its cheekbones, darkened veins invade the milky white of its eyes. The hurlock screams, spittle and blight raining down against those who defend against them. A flinch, the opening, and another hurlock down the line of defenses is hacking into flesh, spraying blood and gore. In this narrow street, the Darkspawn will overrun them. “Captain! What do we do?” It’s screamed somewhere behind him. The other streets have been barricaded. They have funneled all the darkspawn to them. Their only defense. He thinks of her, and their son, so small and red-faced in her arms.
“Don’t let them any further!” Is all he can shout back, raising his shield in time to catch the jagged edge of a rusted sword. He doesn’t know if any of them hear him. They fell one, only to have it replaced by two more. The swarm is endless, hopeless, and his arms ache as the blows continue to batter against him. One by one, they’re pushed back. Connor goes down to his left, the arrow finding purchase in the vulnerable softness of his eye. Greg moves to take his place, but he’s stopped by the hammer crashing down, catching him in the back. The Alpha’s breath fogs from underneath its helmet as it retrieves its weapon.
He watches as it slowly moves to stand at full height. The thing towers over him, horns at either side of its helm. Only barely, in the firelight, can he see the shining red staring back at him. The Alpha drags its hammer behind it as it begins to make its move towards him, and the others. “Steady!” He calls out to those who remain, pressed back against the final barricade. He looks for another way. The two other streets are deserted, empty. He adjusts his grip on his sword, keeps his shield steady, stance wide. “Steady,” he murmurs.
The Alpha suddenly stops, its head turning away from the prey before it. All of them do – turning from them, to the empty left street. They move as if preparing to defend but – “Captain, what are they doing?” Lacey’s voice, whispering beside him. The darkspawn crowd around the street, make a barricade of their own. Through their swaying number, he can barely see what they’re looking at. At first, nothing, then -
She comes reaping over the barricade. It’s no small feat. She lands solidly, dirt kicked up around her. She stands with the same menace as the Alpha Hurlock who now screams at her. She clutches the spear in one hand, while the shield is fastened to her other arm. He nearly chokes when he spots the griffon emblazoned on her chest plate. Warden. A dark figure flies low beside her, hood pulled low, daggers out and shining metal glints in the firelight. They make their charge together. He knows laughing warriors. He knows reluctant warriors. This is one whose oath is to be this warrior. The Warden breaks through the line of the Darkspawn, while her shadow spreads chaos.
The daggers move as if needles, finding their point, their vein, opening it and withdrawing. Done with surgical precision, moving at a speed the likes of which he’s never seen before. His hood curls in the shape of a beak. This crow murders darkspawn with ease, never failing to find their weakest point. The Alpha is moving up and away from them, to confront this complication. He’s lost sight of the two in the thick of it. His hand still trembles around the hilt of his sword. “Forward!” His voice breaks at first. “Forward! Help the Warden!” The rallying cry goes up around him. Together, they charge forward, back into the fray.
They stand silent among their accomplishment. There’s only the fire, the moving of armor from heavy breathing. One of the soldiers half falls to the ground, moving to sit, pressing a hand against his chest, affirming his own heartbeat. The Captain looks at the Warden. Blood is splashed across her armor, her face. It paints her lips an unnatural red. Unconsciously, he forces a swallow. Beside the Warden, her partner takes off his hood. Straw gold wisps around his cheekbones as he grins at her, says something the others can’t quite hear. The crow wraps his fist around his cloak, and reaches upwards. She closes her eyes, leans her face towards him as he begins to wipe away the blood from her face. When he’s finished, he says something again. This time the Warden nods, the barest smile ghosting at her lips. It’s gone as quickly as it came, but the crow is still grinning. He makes his way towards them. “Thank you Warden, for your aid. I didn’t think any help would come in time,” he says.
“Ah, we were simply passing through and mi amor, she tells me she senses darkspawn nearby. Darkspawn! Here! How strange. Of course we had to come and investigate,” the crow says as he puts an arm over her shoulder, taps the griffon on her chest.
“If there’s anything we could do to repay you –”
“Room, and board,” she says, her voice a steady low gravel, “if possible.”
“Of course, Warden. We’ll have a room made for you. It’s yours. We’ll have food sent to you as well. Anything you want.”
“Wine! If there is any. What, mi dulce pájaro, do not give me that look, we have not had any alcohol in weeks. No, Val Firmin does not count because their wine was awful and I wish I could erase the taste from my memory, but here I am, continuing to suffer. Until I have something better, hmm?”
“And wine, if there is any. If it’s no trouble,” the Warden says.
