How Aegon II and Helaena should've been in HOTD Season 1
Aegon ii targaryen and helaena targaryen are the children of Alicent Hightower and Viserys Targaryen. They got married in order to continue the blood purity of house targaryen. In the show, they rarely interact with each other, unlike in the books, where Helaena is a part of the council. She was the one who suggested to Aegon to make peace with Rhaenyra.
In the book, it is shown that Helaena is the angel on his shoulder while Alicent is the devil. Alicent is more brutal than she is in the book. Their actors even tried petition for more helaegon scenes. Here's what I think they should've done with them, and we're starting with the first season.
To be honest, I wish that Aegon had no desire to sleep with another woman. When they were betrothed, he probably had sexual acts with women. But after his marriage with Helaena, he decided not to lay another woman. Instead, he turns to drinking, which is a problem in his marriage.
Alicent has been keeping tabs on Aegon. Her handmaiden informs her about an incident between aegon and Helaena's handmaiden, Dyana. Now, Aegon raping Dyana is going to be a crucial part of the show. However, instead of it being lust and power over women. It's rather lust and power over Helaena. Aegon rapes Dyana because he believes she is Helaena. Dyana tells the Queen and even says, "He must've thought it was the princess. He kept saying her name. I tried to stop him, tried to tell him who I was. "
Alicent does the same as she did, giving the girl moon tea and also giving her money. Alicent storms Aegon and Helaena's chambers where he is sleeping. Alicent knew that Aegon hadn't laid with another since the bedding ceremony with Helaena, but she feared that his drinking would put in a situation.
Alicent woke up by yelling at him. Aegon is confused about why she wakes him up so early. He tries to snarky with her, which causes Alicent to slap him. She says that he is no son of hers. Aegon becomes vulnerable towards Alicent, saying that he's done everything that she and father expect him to. Aegon also says that he’s also been a good husband to Helaena.
Alicent is about to tell him off, but she hears Helaena's voice asking for Dyana's whereabouts. Alicent looks at her only daughter. Her anger towards Aegon has turned to sympathy and regret for Helaena. She goes over to helaena and gives her a big hug. Helaena sits there, not knowing what to do. Alicent lets her go and kisses her on the forehead. She informs both of them that Rhaenyra is here and her children as well.
The next scene we see is them at the council. Vaemond Velaryon is fighting his claim to the seat of Driftmark, believing himself to be Corlys' true heir. In the show, Aemond is standing between them but behind, so there's a gap between Helaena and aegon. For this scenario, Aegon is closer to Helaena. Aegon also stares at Jace. It is most likely Aegon knew Rhaenyra tried to form a betrothal between Helaena and Jace. One thing I noticed about Targaryen men is how possessive they are with their women. Jace stares at him back at him, basically saying "I'm not afraid of you uncle". The scene the same with Daemon cutting Vaemond's half of his face off. Helaena still covers her ears but Aegon grips her dress.
The next scene is the dinner scene. Aegon is having a conversation with Aemond, while Helaena is showing a figurine to otto. Aegon is behind Helaena with his hand on her chair. Viserys arrives and everybody goes to their seat. Viserys has a speech. It's pretty much the same. Helaena decides to give a toast to Baela and Rhaena. I want the speech to be like, "I like to give a toast to Baela and Rhaena. They are to be married soon. Sometimes his drunkenness can be a bit amusing". While Otto gives her a little clap, Alicent gives Aegon a glare. Aegon looks down, smiles embarrassingly, and he has his arms around Helaena's chair.
Jace decides to ask Helaena for a dance which Helaena accepts by taking his hand. Aegon sees this and is filled with jealousy. While Helaena and Jace are dancing, Aegon is staring at them. He turns around and notices that Daemon staring at him with amusement. The pig is brought out and Luke's chuckling triggers Aemond. Aemond gives a toast to Jace, Luke and Joffrey by mocking them with the strong name. Aegon goes along with his brother's antic, which is mostly because Helaena was dancing with Jace.
After the fight breaks up between Alicent and Rhaenyra. Helaena heads to check up on the twins. After putting the twins down, she heads over to the bedchambers. She is getting ready for bed. She hears the door opened and sees aegon. Aegon is looking at her with lust like he's wants to ravage her. They start to have a conversation which would be go like this.
Aegon- How was your dance with Jace Valeryon?
Aegon- fun? Huh? *thinks for a bit* you know our half-sister Rhaenyra tried to form a betrothal between you and her son, Jace. Mother rejected it. Didn't like it. Would like that, sweet sister?
Helaena- it's not like I'm ever given a choice.
Aegon walks over to Helaena, he puts his hands on her cheeks and caressed it. He stares at her eyes, she stares back while holding the back of his hand that's caressing her cheeks. He leans in and gives her a kiss. They kiss for a minute until he breaks apart. Their foreheads are touching. Aegon whispers to her, "that bastard boy wouldn't know how to handle a targaryen woman like you. The closest thing he ever touched a women was as a babe, sucking his mother's breasts. Trust me, Helaena. You would be unsatisfied and miserable if mother agreed the marriage. Perhaps this godforsaken night will end you, bare with a child. My Child."
Later on, we know that Viserys passed away and Alicent mistakes Viserys' wish by believing he wants his son, Aegon, on the iron throne. The green council is having a discussion and makes a plan to put Aegon on the iron throne. Now, in the show, Aegon runs and tries to hide. Which ends up being a competition between Otto and Alicent to get him first. Yet, this storyline with Alicent doesn't really do much. Alicent is pushed to the side when Aemond becomes regent in the next season. She also ignores Aegon because she is still disgusted for what he did to Dyana and the death of innocent ratchcatchers.
Otto and Alicent head over to Helaena and Aegon's bedchambers. Helaena and Aegon are still asleep. Alicent goes over to Helaena and gently wakes her up. Helaena opens her eyes to see her mother. Aegon stirs in his sleep and mumbles,'What's going on?' Otto announced that King Viserys is dead and his last "wish" being that his eldest son Aegon be his heir.
When Aegon hears the last words. He's fully awake. Otto informs they must get ready for the coronation. While Otto is talking, all Aegon could hear are muffle sounds. Aegon excuses himself saying he needs some air. Aegon gets dress and talks out of the chambers. Otto tries to yell out his name, but Aegon isn't listening. Otto looks at Alicent and tells her to get Helaena ready. Alicent looks at Helaena whose in her nightgown, she fiddle with something in her hand.
Alicent says Helaena, and Helaena responds "is this what father truly wanted?". Alicent confirmed that it is. Alicent can't help but feel sympathy for Helaena. She tries to reach out her hand, but Helaena slaps her away. Alicent says that she would get her handmaiden.
Meanwhile Otto finds Aegon in the iron throne. Aegon is staring at the iron throne. The iron throne that has a thousand blades of aegon the conquerer's enemies forged into the dragonfire of Balerion the dread. Otto tells him the history of the iron throne and about aegon the conquerer and that he was destined to sit on the iron throne because that's what King Viserys wanted. Aegon responds by saying If father wanted him to be his heir than why didn't he change his mind while he was alive.
I want aegon to have complicated feeling involving the iron throne and ruling westeroes. Because Viserys never changed his successor, Aegon pretty much accepted that he will never be king. But now, that apparently his father wanted to be his successor which whole time and not Rhaenyra. Aegon wonders if his father actually loved him and believed he was meant to rule. Deep down, Aegon really wants to become the king.
Otto tells him that it doesn't matter it took so long for Viserys to change his mind about succession. In Otto's mind, Viserys must've realise that his daughter was no fit to rule.
The coronation happens, both Aegon and Helaena are standing side by side. The lords and smallfolk are in the throne room. Watching the septan blessed Aegon. Christon Cole puts the conquerer's crown on Aegon's head. He's kneels down and say "my king". Alicent does the same with Helaena. She bows down and says "my queen".
Otto announces Aegon as King. "All Hail King Aegon, second of his name. King of the andals,Rhoynar and the first men. Lord of the seven kingdoms, protector of the realm. Long may he reign". Everybody crowds chants "Long May He Reign".
Aegon stares at his mother who gives him a bow. He stares at his younger brother, Aemond who has his head high. Last, Aegon says at his wife, his queen, Helaena. Helaena gives him a curtsy. Helaena is staring at him but her eyes aren't meeting his as if she doesn't want look at him, directly. She also stares at the conquerer's crown which is placed on his head. The heavy weight and the burden rests on her husband's shoulder.
Aegon sits on the iron throne. There's a lot of things going on, in his mind, right now. He feels this power that he can't really explain. Otto informs that they must discuss what they should do with Rhaenyra. Aegon agrees but after his riding with sunfyre. He informs one of his Kingsguard to fetch Helaena.
Helaena rarely rides her dragon, Dreamfyre. But after everything today and now she has this pressure on being the Queen. Helaena doesn't want to be around politics at this moment. Aegon's kingsgaurd finds Helaena and informs her that Aegon wishes to see her in the dragonpit. Helaena stops what she is doing and follows him. The king and Queen riding with their dragons, sunfyre and dreamfyre.
Alicent looks through her window. She has a proud look on her face. She is happy to see that her eldest children have finally become King and Queen. Yet, why does she also feel this wave of unhappiness. This is what Viserys wanted, right?
