I have a whole test tomorrow and the amount of studying I have to do for it, crazyy

I’m up so late, I should be sleeping right now hehe

That made me sound like I’m a 10 year old that’s running this blog. HAHA

Anyways life has been busy, but thank gooodness tomorrow is Friday! Or in a couple of minutes here! I’ll be free all week thank goodness, I’ll have more time to post more manga panels. :^)

Also I can study my art again, Which will be a great week, I hope!

People are useful... sometimes

The title of this post might sound a little harsh, but in general interactions with most humans shows you whether or not, they either serve a significant or minimal purpose. I use this harsh statement to shed light on how helpful it is to have people in your life who are actually useful. Today on our trip to Johns Hopkins University Library Kalada and I spent 100% of our research time together looking for books and other sources that would strengthen the arguments that we intend to make in our papers. Sitting at a table discussing the sources we were finding helped me understand that sometimes researching is not a DIY project. Sitting with Kalada bouncing ideas back and forth helped me understand that sometimes researching isn’t sitting in solitude. Researching is not a passive act of combing through sources, it's looking at sources and having scholarly conversations with those who can add to your knowledge base and help you develop a different perspective. The most beneficial thing about our trip to the library was not just their wide range of sources to pull from it was the ability to comb through those sources with another person.

To fast forward a little bit, my cousin is a Ph.D. student at Hopkins. She is also a historian, and although I am not sure exactly what her dissertation will look at, I know that it will examine medical practices and how they relate to the manipulation of the black body in a historical context. I am talking about her because before the program started, I told her I wanted to look at eugenics, Mississippi Appendectomies and just historicize in a way the notion that black women’s bodies have never been used to their own benefit. In that, I mean that arguably black women’s reproduction has been manipulated to benefit the masses and specifically the culture of capitalism in the United States. We had talked for awhile before she and her mother left my house and she told me that she would send me sources to get me started on my research. Today at around 4 pm she sent me a list of scholarly sources to pull from for my research. I use this to strengthen my point that sometimes there are people who are just there to help and as a young scholar who is still navigating, those people make academia seem so much less scary.

What made having my cousin send me these sources even greater was the fact that earlier in the day I told Kalada that “I am waiting for the perfect source(s) to fall into my lap and help me further understand where my research is going.” My cousin helped me do that, and I am forever grateful. I also say that people are sometimes useful because honestly, they're most useful when they don't intend to be; my cousin had no clue that our annotated bibliographies are due on Friday, but there she was to save the day.

Mainly, I learned that it is important to make connections in a mutualistic manner. Be as useful to people as you hope that they will be to you.
