✦ showing care without saying "i care" ✦

(for writers who want soft, quiet dynamics)

not everything has to be said out loud. sometimes care looks like… this:

✦ adjusting something without comment → he nudges her grip into place, then steps back like it was nothing

✦ bringing food / water before they ask → a cup appears beside her before she notices she’s thirsty

✦ standing just a little closer than necessary → he shifts half a step, enough to block the wind

✦ slowing down without pointing it out → his pace changes until she doesn’t have to rush

✦ taking over a task silently → the fire is already burning when she looks up

✦ fixing something they rely on → the broken strap is repaired by morning. he never mentions it

✦ letting them try (even if they’ll fail) → he watches, says nothing, waits

✦ giving space instead of pushing → he turns away like the silence belongs to her

✦ remembering small things → he hands her exactly what she needs before she asks

✦ watching the surroundings, not them → his attention stays on the treeline, not on her

✦ letting them lean without reacting → her shoulder brushes his. he doesn’t move

✦ correcting quietly → “lower,” he says, and waits

✦ staying nearby without speaking → he doesn’t leave. that’s enough

✦ sharing warmth like it’s practical → he drapes the cloak over her shoulders like it’s nothing

✦ not asking questions at the right moment → he notices. he lets it go

✦ how to use this:

— pick one per scene — don’t explain it — don’t highlight it — let it sit there quietly

because the strongest kind of care is the one that doesn’t need to be named to be felt

Reread Father's son recently and i am utterly obsessed with your portrayal of Willis Todd, especially in Picturing Your Ribs All Breaking. You write complicated parent-child relationships SO WELL. I feel like a lot of people tend to make Willis like. Cartoonishly abusive. Which is not only shitty but also, fuckin boring. it's so much more interesting to read nuanced, complex parent-child relationships that certainly aren't healthy, but also arent like. Cut and dry, textbook abuse cases.

If you're up to it,, spare us some more Willis and Jason thoughts??

HIII anon! Sorry it took a little bit to answer this!

Specifically when talking about fanfic writing, I find that I personally prefer an abusive Willis to a good father Willis, if only because it makes Jason's pre-existing behavior and (canonical) aggression (even if justified) a lot more understandable when you take into consideration that it's behavior he learned from his father --- both to want to protect others and that protection means to cause harm. Willis destroyed his own life in order to raise Jason properly and pay for Catherine's medication, and it means that Jason believes that if you care about anything, at all, it means you should be ready to completely ruin yourself in order to protect and care for it ((which is why Bruce not killing Joker hurts so much)) and with Willis being an exclusively good parent, that has a tendency to get lost? To me?

It is, however, a very fine line between "realistic troubled father/son relationship" and "just classism" which a lot of the time I find writers are unable to thread (myself included. the first work in the Father Son's series was unbelievably bigoted of me, reading back on it nowadays. thankfully the rest of the series isn't even half as bad) but when you get it right? Oh, there's nothing quite like it.

It's also incredibly important to me that Jason irrevocably loves Willis. If he's capable of loving Cathy as much as he does in fics and canon, then he should extend the same grace to Wil. If anything, I think Jason should love Wil MORE. The reason why it's often easier to hate a father more than a mother is because your mother was the one to truly raise you, but in the Todds' dynamics, Willis was the one to raise Jason when he was out of prison, because Catherine was either sick or drugged out of her mind depending on which canon you subscribe to. Willis was Jason's primary caretaker and that means that Jason extends to him so much more grace than he deserves.

Also again, to clarify, this is about FANFIC. Most of this is based on vibes and personal writer thoughts and not an analysis of canon information --- think of it as "filling the gaps in canon" if anything.
