I need to talk about my Poppy AU now that Chapter 5 is out.

Elliot Ludwig and Mrs. Porters have remained friends after Molly divorced Elliot in the 30s. She actually had a hand in creating toys like Bron and Boxy Boo (fun fact: she’s actually the true creator of Box She Boo! 😁).
So that meant that Elliot’s children and Mrs. Porters’ only daughter were always seen hanging out with each other (more like his daughter wanting to hang out with the teens).

-Oliver “Ollie” Ludwig, the middle oldest child of Elliot Lugwig-
Oliver is what the modern folk would call a “huge tech nerd.” He’s often seen tinkering with how his father’s toys worked but with little to no luck. Oliver wasn’t much of a fan of his father’s toy factory like his sister was, especially that gangly jester thing Elliot made for him.

He hates the nickname “Ollie.” It makes him sound childish.
He’s eighteen years old (in this image).
His birthday is September 12th and he was born in 1931.
His favorite toy is actually Bron. He was very big into dinosaurs back in the day.
Very big into technology and mathematics. That’s why when he gets older, he would be a college professor or a teacher.
His favorite color is green.
His favorite food is Chips Ahoy!, Pringle’s, Jell-O, Fruit Stripe Gum, and Hardee’s.
His favorite drink is Sprite.
He’s pretty popular for some reason but that’s because everyone knows his father.

Poppy was everything Elliot ever wanted. She was his whole entire world. She loved his work more than anything in the world, which often gets her picked on by other kids but so what? They were just jealous of her. Besides, whose father makes a doll named after them?

Her nickname is usually “Pops.”

Her birthday is March 7th and she was born in 1949 (I know all that shit is canon but shh).
Her favorite toy is Poppy, obviously.

Her favorite drink is chocolate milk.
She’s a very imaginative child, a visionary; just like her dad.

Penelope is the only daughter within seven boys in the Porters family, but she’s been described as her mother’s “mini-me” for decades. With her good looks and charm, it’s no wonder why so many people call her that. After all, beauty is everything.

She was born in New Jersey but her family moved to [wherever Poppy Playtime takes place in] when she was just two years old.
She’s seventeen years old (in this image).
Her birthday is January 10th and she was born in 1932.
Her favorite toy is Poppy too. For some reason…
She was actually accepted in the Young Geniuses Program in 1966, just like a certain doctor…
Her favorite color is red.
Her favorite food is apples, cherries, strawberries, spaghetti, vanilla ice cream, and dark chocolate.
Her favorite drink is Cola-Cola.
She’s very beautiful for her age, just like her mother.

It’s been years since Playtime Co. shut its doors after August 8th, 1995. A lot has changed for these three toys for the worst.
Elliot has since passed away, people and orphans have been turned into Bigger Bodies, and one “Angel” was sent to this cursed hell.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.

One of Elliot’s most damning creations, a towering biomechanical monstrosity made of blood, flesh, bones, and wires. Complete with rage and resentment towards his father and sister. He is often described by his best follower as a “god” and his “best friend.” Yeah right…
Headcanons
He hates being called by his old name. It means nothing to him now.
He was around in his 20s-30s when he was turned into the monster his father created, a prototype for how to bring his sister back from the dead.
His creation date is currently unknown at this time.
His favorite follower is CatNap, of course. Chum Chompkins is his second favorite (for the most part). Lily Lovebraids? No. Let’s stop talking about this now.
He despises all the workers in Playtime Co., mostly a certain redhead scientist but more on that later.
His favorite color is black and red.
He can’t eat like his followers. He’s built different than them.
He tries drinking the blood of his victims once. It didn’t stick around though.
He wants nothing more than Poppy. After all, everything dies except for them…

In 1950, after twenty years of struggling to innovate in the toy industry, Playtime Co. created Poppy Playtime. She was created with the intent of acting and talking like a real girl, just like her owner. As a result, Poppy became the most popular toy in Playtime history!
Headcanons
She has many nicknames in the factory. Most of them aren’t very nice.
She’s still (mentally) eleven years old.
She died sometime in the 1960s, resulting in Elliot finding a way to bring her back.
Her best friends are Kissy Missy, Giblet, Doey the Doughman, and DogDay (the Heretic one).
She’s been abused by the company since her father died.
Her favorite color is still blue.
She misses the taste of food, even though she’s not starving.
Not even drinking is required.
She misses her dad…

In 1989, Playtime Co. hired Dr. Penelope Porters after Elliot saw success in her back in her YGP days. She would later go on to become Dr. Harley Sawyer’s assistant within the Bigger Bodies Initiative in 1990. However, her obsession with 1006 got the best of her.
Headcanons
Her nickname is Penny from her colleagues but Harley calls her Penelope. But when she became Perfect Poppy, her nickname became Experiment 1410.
She was also in her 20s-30s when she became the adult version of Poppy (just in a very bad way 😬).
She loves Prototype to death.
She went from scientist to criminal to a toy. What a cruel world. Also, watch out because she knows how to be a nurse now.
Her favorite color is blood.
She’s never hungry.
She drinks the blood of her victims.
She’s perfect in every way…

TADC Last Act/Episode 9 spoilers below.
I'm also putting a content warning for in depth discussions of suicide.
I saw The Last Act (absolutely phenomenal) last night and one thing stuck out to me: the way Jax's suicidality is presented in the show.
It's a facet of his character that I thoroughly love, and the way we see it fully play out in episode 9 is just *chefs kiss* it's so good!
I really want to focus in on one main aspect of his character, here. I want to focus on how much of an asshole he is, because it serves a very specific function that tells us a lot about Jax as a person.
In episode 6, right when Pomni starts to really make progress with getting to know Jax and getting through to him, he snaps. He does everything in his power, after having a great time with her mowing down the competition, to make her hate him. He can't stand the idea that she doesn't hate him. It very obviously unsettles him, for reasons he would never tell willingly. We don't really get an answer to why until episode 9, though we can infer.
In episode 9 we finally, through Jax's memories, get to meet Ribbit and Kaufmo. We see how long it took Jax to acclimate, to find his place, and how much effort these two specifically put in. We see that, while Jax and Kaufmo were friends, Ribbit was clearly the person Jax trusted most in the entire circus--so much that it, to a degree, terrified him. We learn why Jax even has trust issues to begin with, and I don't blame him (her) for a second. but that's not the point here.
One key thing we learn very early on is that Jax hates himself. It's obvious, if you look. He puts on airs to make himself seem like he doesn't care, like he's only a jackass because it's his nature. The big moment for me, though, was in episode 6. Jax's near-abstraction, and the framing of it, hit hard as someone who was extremely suicidal at one point. And now, seeing the resolution of his arc, I want to dig into three scenes specifically.
First, his pushing Ribbit away. He panicked, revealing the same thing to her that, in his mind, killed his mother. The last time he made a major fuckup was when he shared that with her, after all. No amount of reassurance from Ribbit could have helped I don't think... Because Jax was already well on his cycle. I don't know if he was to the point of suicidality here, yet. But his pushing away of Ribbit is absolutely a contributing factor of it. We see it in episode 7, when he gets caught up looking at the winter level orb. We see it in episode 5's intermission, him staring at her door. He blames himself. He forces Ragatha to never speak of her again because he blames himself for her death. He could see how his pushing her away was affecting her, she told him as much, but he didn't relent. And she abstracted. And Jax fucked up again and now another person he cared about is dead.
And that's the point, I feel, when he started to become suicidal. And it's at this point that his pushing people away starts to take on a slightly different tone. When he lashes out at Pomni in episode 6, he's very intentional in how he does it. Saying he'd forget all about her if she abstracted, trying to push her to her limit: He is trying to make her hate him. Trying to make her stop caring about him. Because no one caring would make it easier for him to die. It's a feeling I am very familiar with, because I did the same thing. Going beyond just cutting people off, intentionally becoming the worst version of myself so that people will be Glad that I'm gone. Jax is doing the same thing. He sees his friendship with Ribbit in her, and he's terrified of the same shit happening. He feels he's already too far gone, that there's no point in trying to save him. But Pomni insists. And he wishes he could hate her for it. Part of him does hate her. And he needs her to hate him.
And she doesn't. She sees through him. Her regret, we learn in episode 9, is not reaching out. She, like Jax, blames herself for his abstraction. She knows she is one of the few people he tentatively trusted, and she didn't go to him when she knew he was struggling. When she finally finds him, deep within his own abstraction, he begs to know why she cares. Tries to tell himself that no one should care. Tries to tell himself that he hates her. Tells her that she's making this so much more complicated. And then... that he doesn't want to go.
Jax hated himself. Hated the role he forced himself into. Hated what he felt he needed to be. And Pomni's refusal to give up scared him, because he could see that she could be a way out of this despair, but was too scared to take the risk. It's why, of the shadows we see in his torture scene, we see Ribbit, Kaufmo, and Pomni. We see how badly he craved their friendship, but was too afraid of being known. Of being seen. He couldn't stand the idea of being hated for who (s)he truly was, so she took control of the narrative, strove to make them hate a version of himself he could control and construct, protecting his true self and drowning himself in the process.
She's a very interesting character to me, as someone who did the same thing for a lot of the same reasons. I see myself in her.
