The Cookie Kingdom was unbearably bright.
The sun always seemed to shine here, the paved streets bright and almost garish against his pale eyes. Dark Enchantress' fortress was never as bright as this.
Grumbling to himself, Licorice set off down one of the many streets. Pomegranate Cookie's stupid plan with the Sugar Swan failed, and so of course he was the one assigned to sneak in and spy on these idiot cookies who were ruining everything. He could be helping to bring Dark Enchantress Cookie back right now, but instead his talents and prowess were wasted here.
These cookies were extremely naïve. He had practically waltzed right up to the kingdom and spewed some bullshit story about changing sides, and they had welcomed him in with open arms.
Well, it would be their downfall.
Suddenly colliding with something, he stumbled back. Tripping over his robes, he fell backwards, his scythe clattering out of his hands. Over the sudden soft ringing produced by the experience of having fallen down, he dimly registered a shattering noise and a yelp of surprise.
Gingerly sitting up, he growled, a rant building up in his throat.
"Watch where you're going you stupid moron!" he snapped, but the sight of the cookie he'd bumped into made all the words he already had plans to say die off in his throat.
With a hand brushing through his leafy, green hair, Herb Cookie sat up and rubbed the back of his head.
"Goodness, you startled me," Herb exclaimed softly, giving Licorice a sheepish smile. "I'm so sorry about that, I was lost in thought."
Stunned, Licorice could only gape. In the sunlight, Herb Cookie looked almost vibrant, though strangely, it didn't hurt to look.
"Here."
While Licorice had been lost in thought, Herb had already gotten to his feet. Blinking up at the other cookie, Licorice glanced at the offered hand, then back at him. Despite himself, he took it, and Herb pulled him up to his feet.
"Are you alright?" Herb asked, gentle brown eyes meeting his one, pale, sickly yellow.
Suddenly aware that he'd just been staring, Licorice scowled and snatched his hand away. "I'm fine, no thanks to you," he sniffed in a haughty manner, but Herb didn't seem to be put off at all.
"That's good to hear! Again, I'm really sorry for bumping into you." Smiling at Licorice, Herb turned to the shattered remains of the potted plant he'd been carrying, and his kind face fell. "Ah. Well, I suppose there's nothing to it."
Herb knelt down beside the plant and scooped it into his arms, dirt and all. Licorice suppressed a shiver, and took a careful step back. Still though, he couldn't help but feel… something, seeing the way Herb's smile had dropped.
"Sorry," he muttered, half under his breath, half choked in his throat by guilt.
Herb stood with the plant in his arms, carefully tucking the roots away from any danger of harm, and turned to give Licorice a little smile.
"No, it's okay! Really, I should've been looking where I was going. I have to go repot this plant, but I'm really sorry again. You're Licorice Cookie, right?"
Words dying in his throat, Licorice nodded instead. Herb's smile was distracting.
"I'm Herb Cookie," he introduced himself. "You can usually find me in the gardens or working at the flower shop if you ever want to come talk to me! You seem nice, and it's always nice to make new friends."
For a moment, Licorice wanted to snap at him. He wanted to tell Herb that he didn't want to be friends with such a weak cookie, he wanted to deny him and storm off. But Pomegranate wouldn't be pleased if he didn't come back with intel, and here was one of them, practically offering.
"Sure. I'll keep it in mind," Licorice grumbled, fully expecting Herb to take it back or make fun of him.
He wasn't expecting the warmth in Herb's smile, or the sudden breathlessness in his chest as Herb bid him goodbye.
He certainly wasn't expecting himself to look forward to visiting.
The flower shop was bright, and Licorice was starting to regret coming here. The eyesores called flowers danced in the wind, smiling at him, twinkling with an odd, glistening laughter. He repressed a shudder, hugging his arms against his chest.
Herb Cookie was nowhere in sight. He walked through the rows of planters set out, shying away from the leaves of the candy flowers each time one reached out to touch him.
Upturning his lip, his pale eyes glanced around the shop once more. He hadn't come here to look like a fool. Though if he was being honest, he wasn't entirely sure why he'd come here in the first place.
"Licorice Cookie?"
The soft voice caught him off guard, and he stifled a yelp, turning to look at the perpetrator who'd startled him. Herb Cookie stared up at him, a little smile growing on his face. The sight of it sent an odd rush of heat to his cheeks.
"There you are," Licorice huffed, turning his head away with a particularly pretentious air, the way Pomegranate did when she was upset with the results of his missions. He hoped Herb wasn't paying too much attention to his face.
"I'm sorry if I kept you waiting long," Herb said softly, and the gentle touch of Herb's hand on his shoulder made him freeze. "I was in the back tending to that flower I dropped the first time we met. They're doing very well! Would you like to come see them?"
Licorice stared down at Herb, the way he smiled, the way his hand felt gentle, light on his shoulder. It felt as if the witches had lit an oven fire in his cheeks.
"Sure," he replied, though he didn't know why. He could justify being friendly with Herb as gathering intel for Pomegranate and Dark Enchantress, but this wasn't that. This felt… different.
Herb's smile grew brighter, and without further prompting, he gently took Licorice's hand and led him into the backroom of the flower shop.
The world narrowed itself, and all Licorice could focus on was Herb's hand in his, how soft it felt, how strange and warm, how perfectly it seemed to fit in his. His spindly hand in Herb's gentle, loving, life giving one.
"Look at how well they're doing! Usually laughing flowers don't do well under so much stress like that, but this one is quite the fighter."
Herb's proud voice brought him back to reality, and he dimly registered the red petals of the laughing flower, the everlasting grin in the center of their petals, and the way they swayed to hint at laughter. They perked up at Herb's voice, and a quiet, joyful giggle reached his ears.
"Huh," Licorice managed to utter, eyes fixed on the flower and the way Herb reached out to gently pet the petals. The flower almost seemed to lean into his touch.
Herb turned to smile up at him, sunlight in his eyes and rustling flowers in his breath.
Licorice forgot how to breathe.

Slamming the door to the generic cookie house behind him, Licorice made his way over to the marshmallow bed and flopped onto it, groaning long and loud into the pillows. Across the room, Bat Cat perked up from their perch, hanging upside down.
"Meowster?"
They unfolded their wings and flapped their way over to Licorice, perching on his hooded head.
"What's wrong?" they asked, poking their face into the crook of Licorice's neck in an attempt to see his face.
Licorice groaned again, pulling his hood further over his face. Bat Cat let out a chuffed meow, before pointedly stepping onto his head and curling up to get comfortable.
Herb's smile wouldn't leave his mind's eye. The way his eyes crinkled up with happiness, sun kissed cheeks dimpling with that bright smile, that oven damned smile.
The kindness in his touch, unconditional and genuine. Despite Licorice Cookie's origins, despite his magic, despite his everything, it didn't seem to matter to Herb, who only wanted to show him that joy could be found in little things.
The laughing flower had let him pet their petals too.
"Witch's fire," he cussed, startling Bat Cat with the force of it. "I'm so fucked."
