I am barely a minute into rewatching for the fourth time, Infinity War, Pt. 1...and I had a huge epiphany.

Loki had the tesseract on him. He has the ability to copy himself.

Guys. GUYS.

As Clint stated in the first Avengers film, the tesseract is a door!! A DOOR TO ANYWHERE IN THE UNIVERSE

While holding it, he could instantaneously make a copy of himself, leaving the copy behind!!... and then send his real self through the tesseract (without anyone being the wiser because the copy is still there) to...hey, who’s really freakin’ powerful and could most likely take on Thanos? Yeah. The Grand Master.

This is one of my two theories that actually fits with the movie.
