Wait fuck, even with a 25% compression rate, I’m not gonna have enough space on my hard drive for the backup unless I do some reparititioning
Turns out it was a dead HDD causing all the issues. Good news: Unplugging it fixes the hang on startup. Bad News: It had a year and a half worth of my files on it. It was my old Media Drive, turned back up drive, turned dead drive. I shed a tear for all my files. The S/O and I spent almost a whole day trying to fix things.
I might be able to get my stuff back with a bit of bodging and a USB>SATA cable. *Crosses fingers*
Oh, but hey, my laptop started working again, so there’s that.
Now I’m off to update at least one of my stories. Heh.
I have been working with some files for a few weeks that I thought were TIFF fiies, then they failed to import into a piece of software, so I looked at them with a hexeditor and discovered the files were JPEGs renamed to end in .tif. Every piece of software had silently detected that these were JPEGs and functioned correctly before this.
I got a kernel panic on a raspberry pi. It was totally my fault, as I was attempting to reinstall the operating system with dd from a thumb drive. In other words, writing a disk image from a thumb drive over the sd card which the operating system was running on. Strangely, every thing looked find until a tried to reboot the system.
This was the second time I did this. The first time Raspbian was able to recover from the strangeness. (Some message about resizing the root partition)
I should have loaded sha1sum into memory first and then double checked that the write was successful before rebooting.
(The reason I am not using a microSD card reader like a normal person is that I don’t have one currently, but I guess I will have to break down and order one online)
So I just bought one of the new 27.5″ iMacs (paid for by my uni fuck yeah), and like, it’s so big. SO. BIG. I don’t need my old-lady reading glasses AT ALL: I can actually SEE EVERYTHING. This must be how people with actual vision feel!

there is a certain point where i am forced to press the x button because i have so many tabs open on a window that navigating it is physically impossible
