Song Review: Hey Colossus feat. Mark Lanegan - “The Mirror”
Guest narrator Mark Lanegan’s spoken baritone rattles over ominous, sludgy music on Hey Colossus’ “The Mirror.”
The track from the band’s forthcoming Dances / Curses is an eerie, subdued tale of an apparent suicide - but it's opaque - that begins and ends with the protagonist listening to the incongruously upbeat “Blueberry Hill.”
I heard a loud click/and a purl of smoke rose from the cap of my temple/accelerating quickly/into an inverted Niagaran-like cataract/I turned sharply on my heels/to see a silver gas apparate over the pillowed seat, Lanegan rumbles not unlike a desperate Leonard Cohen.
... Gently I passed through the rippling vapors
As the band says of the 75-minute album on which the dirge appears, “The Mirror” is “gonna take some listening.” It’s worth the effort.
Grade card: Hey Colossus feat. Mark Lanegan - “The Mirror” -B+
