Stiles wakes up groggy and on an unfamiliar couch. It's not exactly the first time that's happened, but it is the first time it's happened sober. He sits up, rubs at his drooping eyelids, and wonders what the protocol is. Should he knock on Derek's bedroom door and tell him he's heading out? Is a note to impersonal? Not that they know each other all that well. It was just one dinner.

Stiles is blessedly saved from deciding what to do by a key turning in the front door's lock.

Derek slips in and shuts the door very carefully, obviously trying to be quiet. Oh, god. Stiles was not built for that amount of cute.

"Is that coffee?" Stiles asks to get Derek's attention. He clears his throat, voice rough with sleep, and says, "I really need that to be coffee."

Derek turns towards him and smiles just slightly. It's officially Stiles' new life mission to get him to smile without reservation.

"I brought muffins, too." Derek wiggles the bag in his left hand as he crosses the small living room to sit next to Stiles.

"Oh my god, I think I love- uh, muffins."

Derek raises an eyebrow dubiously. "You think you love muffins."

"Shut up and hand me my coffee," Stiles mutters, grabbing for one of the cups. He's blushing like mad, but he'll deal with it for the small, pleased smile that Derek lets steal across his face when he thinks Stiles isn't paying attention.

“Thanks again for letting me share,” Stiles says, following Professor Hale into his apartment. Hale’s apartment. Not Stiles’. Stiles has half a stick of butter and taco seasoning at his apartment.

“I’m not letting you do anything,” Derek – Stiles has now seen his apartment, he feels he’s earned the right to use the guy’s first name – says. He sets the food down on the kitchen table and begins rooting around for plates and glasses. “I’d actually appreciate it if you left.”

Stiles tilts his head in concession. It’s a fair enough point. He happened to overhear Derek’s friends cancel plans over the phone, leaving the guy with three times as much food as one person needs. Aka the perfect amount of dinner for a starving college kid such as himself. “You know, normally I would. I know when I’m not wanted.”

Derek snorts in disbelief. Rude. It’s true, but still. He couldn’t know that for sure, not from the one class Stiles had taken from him way back in freshman year.  

“But the situation was getting dire,” Stiles pushes on. “I was ready to start gnawing off some fingers there.”

“Yours or other patrons'?” Derek asks, taking a seat at the table. Stiles takes it as a cue and follows suit.

“Oh, other patrons'. Can’t have anything happen to these bad boys.” Stiles wiggles his fingers in front of him. It’s not until he notices the flush rising up Derek’s neck that he realizes how that sounds. He clears his throat. “You know, because I’m majoring in Computer Science.”

“Ah.”

They quietly spoon food onto their plates and dig in. It’s kind of nice. Between his schedule and his roommate, Scott’s, Stiles eats alone more often than not. If this is going to be the only meal he shares with someone else for a while, he’s going to make the most of it.

“So,” Stiles says, frantically casting around for literally any topic. “Any fuck-ups you want to vent about?”

Derek blinks, fork half-way to his mouth. Then, amazingly, he laughs softly. “Actually, there’s this one kid who legitimately tried to argue with me today that the Holocaust never happened.”

“Our college really needs stricter admittance standards.”
