In honor of the 20th anniversary (shit I feel old now) of one of my very first ships from my childhood becoming canon in the Justice League episode Wild Cards. I give you the complex (and unresolved on screen) relationship between John Stewart (Green Lantern) and Shayera Hol (Hawkgirl) from the DCAU series Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.

Okay but remember that Batman's line in Starcrossed about women being the most mysterious creatures in the universe, shortly after learning that Hawkgirl was a Thanagarian spy all along?

First of all, I love that he's trying to well, maybe not comfort, but say something slightly uplifting to Green Lantern, because their bromance is living in my head rent free. They are both extremely goal-oriented, unambivalent, disciplined and kinda relying on each other and that's friendship goals

Second of all, I don't think that the "mysterious" part is misogynistic or something like that. I believe a little part of Batman kind of admires Shayera for being so capable to make all six of them believe her

My third point can be shortened to Bruce trying to convey the "I feel you dude, I fell in love with a teammate as well, they are both dangerous and badass, let's get a beer" message

In conclusion, friends who travel in time together stay together

It's no surprising that they did become an couple if they had to sit that close in literally an couple stories into the first season.

Okay but I have published my first Justice League fanfic and I gotta tell you, it feels awesome. Been writing them for over a decade now (yup, I'm old) and I believe I have promised someone here to let them know once I upload something so here we go

Okay but if love doesn't feel like 90's R'n'B or watching DCAU's best couples, I don't want it.

They all have amazing chemistry and I still think that if Bruce Timm and co wanted to resurrect this section of DCAU in some tounge-in-cheek way, animated action rom com with those four couples would be a smashing hit.

Okay but I can totally see John and Shayera getting back together, John proposing to Shayera and then those two laying cuddled together in the dark, deciding to pick Diana as the maid of honor and Bruce as the best man just to screw Batman up and create some more tension between the Amazon and the Dark Knight

I Should Tell You- Rent

There are a lot of things she should tell John. The first being that she’s a spy for her planet’s army and the last being that she loves him with all her heart.

Or maybe the other way around.

She should tell him that she’s a walking disaster. From the time she was born to the time she left Thanagar, Shayera Hol was widely regarded as the “Harshest Heartbreaker this side of the Tamaigen Mountains”. She couldn’t handle her own heart much less someone else’s.

She wants to tell him that they could move faster. She isn’t made of glass. He’s so hesitant that she wants to scream. While she wants to do more, she afraid of pressuring him. She isn’t exactly human, and she doesn’t want to push him too far only to lose him.

Hro Talak is toward the top of the list too. Though she was engaged before she left, Shayera knew from the beginning that she and Hro were doomed from the start but her pride (and her desperation to disprove her reputation) led her to say yes when he proposed.

She should thank him for saving her from the bomb. And having Christmas with her. And saving her life ten times over.

She should tell John that he taught her how to smile again. That he made her happier than she ever thought she could be. Every thought of him ruffles her feathers and turns her cheeks red. It’s a wonder this insignificant human captured the mighty heartbreakers heart.

When she jumped into the abyss with John she planned to tell him a lot of things. Every word she meant to tell him fell by the wayside. She betrayed them, she betrayed him.

She should have told him.
