I finally got to see the Frozen musical! Things I liked:
The costumes! The staging! So gorgeous! So detailed! All of the group numbers were visually stunning and the new songs added a lot to both characters and Arendelle.
Hans was goofy. He and Anna had a whole dorky/awkward vibe going that made his betrayal and actual personality that much more shocking at the end. Love Is An Open Door was fantastic.
Anna in ice harvesting gear, and stripping down to her underthings to put it on, was great.
We have the origin story of Kristoff's rock hard abs! The hidden folk have some seriously sculpted bodies. Kristoff's arc from a sarcastic, adventurous mountain man to man completely devoted to Anna was well done.
Iduna had a much more active role in trying to mitigate disaster when Anna was hurt. Loved her being the one to know what was necessary, calling to the hidden folk, and identifying herself as a child of the Northuldra. Agnarr did not seem surprised because he was not and had known for a long time (well some personal opinion in that last sentence but it's the hill I'm going to die on).
Speaking of dying, the dancers who were sort of interpretive dancing the storm that downed their ship tore Agnarr and Iduna away from each other and it was truly a horrible way to die and viscerally sad.
Olaf was so well done! Love the little song the sisters sang when making him. The puppeteer was amazing and made him equally hilarious and sincere so all the moments of humor and drama hit just right.
Speaking of puppeteers, my child though Sven was an actual reindeer. Good thing the yearly eye appointments are this week.
Very cool technical stuff with costume changes, Elsa's cape and glove flying off, and the way she made snow.
The hidden folk were so much better than the trolls. They still had silly beats but overall were creepy and mysterious in a more compelling way. They also didn't show Elsa a vision of herself being torn apart from a mob. They gave her a sort of guided meditation to her future which showed that - which isn't actually a whole lot better but was less traumatizing to my kids watching than the movie.
And the merchandise was great! I wish they had that Anna-esque kids' cloak in adult sizes.
This is a page out of my sketchbook that I drew over the top of because I didn't want to subject anyone to the mess beneath. Just trust me on this. Most of what I have on Huldufolk, the Hidden Folk, or Icelandic Elves, comes from both Icelandic Folkatales & Legends and The World Guide to Gnomes, Fairies, Elves, And Other Little People. One day I'll get around to writing a proper Myth Stuff Entry for them, but for now here's the limited information from the sketchbook: "Instead of a philtrum (the small indent line on your upper lip) they have a small cartilage ridge. Or, they have no division between their two nostrils. Or not, they seem to appear human for the most part with one single trait giving them away. Their dress, when not explicitly hiding among humans, is green and reminiscent of local flora. For instance, the Elf Queen Hild is drawn with puffy shoulders of hvönn, or Angelica archangelica. Unlike English fairies, Icelandic elves bare no resemblance to insects or other animals and are usually humanoid, like their ancestors the alfar. Not mentioned is the fact that huldufolk tend to be described as tall for humans. Not giant, just tall. And, in some other, mostly modern portrayals, elves are described as quite small. Which shouldn't pose too much of a problem for them. The problem is mostly on our part, as we fail to see how an individual can exist at two different sizes at the same time. Elfs don't seem to have any trouble with it though. Neither do giants. In a lot of old stories, Norse sagas and the Eddas especially, giants are simultaneously enormous giants and human-sized enough to interact with the gods on a personal level. Three individuals are drawn up top: the forlorn elf lover from the story of the same name, the Elf Queen Hild, and Thievin' Kidhus. The Forlorn Elf lover is a story where a romantic/sexual relationship between an supernatural being and human is actually wholesome, even if it has a bitter ending for the lovers. The lover is a tall, richly dressed man, travelling with a smaller man that turns out to be his half-human son.
Hild is stated to be the queen of the elfs, or at least a faction of them. There doesn't seem to be a ruler of /all/ of the elfs of one contiguous area as we'd expect in human nations. She was cursed by her step-mother to work as a servant for a human family. Only one night of the year, Christmas, could she return to her elf family and live an hour or two of luxury before being forced back, until her curse is broken that is.
And Kidhus is just an asshole that steals stuff. That's it. One time someone caught him invisibly stealing stuff, so he gave the guy who caught him a ladder that would carry him and his wife to Heaven. Presumably as a moral test, as they die before they get there by a lack of oxygen making them fall. (Not making that up either, it's in the original text that the got light-headed and fell from the ladder).
One not illustrated, but still interesting was a tall elfin bride who cursed her good for nothing baby daddy after he refused to baptize their child. In return, he leapt into the ocean mad, turning into a Rauðkembingur, or Red-crest, an evil whale.
Round 2 of the Itch.io bundle!
Catlandia Crisis as Fort Pawprint
A short 2d turn based combat adventure game where you design a cat named Commander Nugget of the cat queen’s army stationed at fort Pawprint to protect the lake and it’s fish from the dogs that roam the Whiskerwoods with Sausage your only other party member. This game reminds be a bit of an app where you control alpacas and fight other alpacas. The art style is cute but the colors are very bright, there were a few noticeable glitches and the game was very short but it was fun.
Hidden Folk
A black and white hand drawn Ispy game kinda like Where’s Waldo but I’ve always been bad at those so I tapped out pretty quick. It’s cute if your into that type of game!
Art Sqool
Well hello eye strain! Very trippy like a 3D dr Seuss book, it’s almost impossible to walk around due to the swinging camera and it’s hard to draw with a mouse which is the main game play. I suggest if you want to play this to have a tablet and the ability to handle rapidly flashing colors .
Walden
I had to write an essay on Walden by Henry David Thoreau in like my first year of community college. Can’t remember it much about my essay or the book but this game gave me motion sickness tbh so I had to stop pretty early on, if you play it tell me how it was!
Milkmaid of the Milkyway
A point and click adventure where young milkmaid named Ruth who lives and works alone on a small mountainous dairy farm and speaks in rhymes tries to save her cows from abduction via alien ship very charming but (spoiler warning) trigger warning for an animal death near the end.
Anodyne
A very weird top down pixeled classic Zelda esq game where you play as Young, and boy armed with a broom tasked with doing... something to save the world... by an old man. There’s a lot of mysterious things in this game and it has an almost dream like quality on how the mechanics of the world itself operates and there’s a lot of room for theorizing on just what is going on and what it means because I’m not sure. I really enjoyed it though but then again I do have a fondness for zelda-esq games. Also if you want all the collectible cards you’re almost 100% going to need a online guide.
Wide Ocean Big Jacket
A preteen named Ben goes on a camping trip with his girlfriend Mord and her aunt and uncle. Honestly Mord reminds me of my little sister, like someone just transplanted almost her exact personality onto a video game character. Anyway it’s short and their some dirty jokes but it’s sweet. The 3D models are a little weird but the game is mostly dialogue based and it’s not an issue.
Puzzle Puppers
DOGS!!! A puzzle game about elongating corgis or shibas getting meat and reaching food bows. It reminds me of this app game Flow where long doggie bodies can block others from getting their food. A straight forward game with 80 puzzle levels.
"It's all because of me. They look my way and see... A monster."
Experiencing Iceland: Stories and Spirits
I was fortunate enough last month to be able to visit Iceland for just under two weeks. I had never been there before and had been looking forward to the trip, as Iceland has a reputation for its beauty and for its deeply ingrained folklore. Neither disappointed.
