For several centuries, Schönbrunn Palace acted as one of the residences of the Austrian Imperial Family; it was particularly beloved as the summer palace of Empress Maria Theresa, and then again as a primary residence of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth (Sisi). Following the fall of the monarchy in 1918, the palace became property of the Republic of Austria. Today the palace and gardens are open to the public. [website]
