Lookism
Now I know what you might be thinking.....”What the heck kind of name is that?” and if you already know what Lookism is, then I bet you didn’t know that it meant “...discriminatory treatment toward physically unattractive people...”.
Now, if you haven’t guessed, this post is about another Webtoon, but this time it’s a super popular ongoing series by Taejoon Park. Lookism started being published on Webtoons on June 3rd, and has recently taken Webtoons by a storm with over 2 million likes on the site alone, surpassing many series’ that have been around for years longer than the recent comic.
The story is about a high schooler who is deemed as ugly or a “pig” by his peers, making him susceptible to bullying by his more attractive or popular peers. But the story only gets interesting after he switches schools and mysteriously gets the body of an extremely handsome person. And along with this newfound beauty, the body is in peak physical condition, making him stronger than even revered fighters at his new school.
Watching Daniel Park struggle with sharing bodies with his previously ugly body, and his new beautiful body, is extremely captivating because you see him trying to become a better person in both bodies, but because of his outer appearances, he gets completely different responses to his actions depending on which body he’s in. A consistent theme throughout the Webtoon is that you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover, no matter how ugly that cover may be.
The Webtoon truly lives up to it’s name, because a major theme in the story is how different people in society are treated, based on their outward appearance. Personally, I think that his change in bodies, reflect his personality and how we should be treated, but because of the way that we look, we are treated radically different.
I really love this Webtoon for it’s variety of character design and beauty in general. Taejoon is very good at making the attractive characters attractive and unattractive characters unattractive. Overall, a stand out manhwa and deserving of all of your love and praise!!
My next post will hopefully be about Korean fashion, and my take on it, along with some styles that I like to pull off, inspired by my Korean brethren (P.S. It’s mostly....only black on black on black). Stay tuned for my next post!!! Turn on post notifications if you want instant notification when I post!!!!
