It was a chilly spring day and Evelyn was walking to school with her friend Lucy. Lucy was going on and on about the project she was doing for science while Evelyn zoned out.
She was thinking about Lucy actually, she had liked Lucy since 3rd grade but they were best friends and she didn’t want to ruin that. She was pretty sure Lucy was straight anyways, Lucy had had a few boyfriends and never showed any interest in any other genders. Evelyn found Lucy just perfect, inside and out. She loved her long light brown hair and beautiful green eyes that always seemed to shine when she was talking about something she was passionate about. The way she smiled when Evelyn got her anything, even the smallest thing.
“Were you listening to me?”
“Oh really, what did I say?”
“I knew it, you weren’t paying any attention,” Lucy said with a tone of mixed sadness and annoyance.
“It’s okay, it wasn’t important anyways.”
Evelyn looked at Lucy as she looked away.
“Nothing, just talking to you. It doesn’t matter.”
They came up to the school and went inside, going straight to their locker.
They looked up to see their friend running up to them.
“Thank god, I thought you two were never gonna make it.”
“Sam, it’s only 7:35.” Evelyn said, looking up at the clock.
“I know but still.” Sammy responded in a whiny voice.
Lucy patted her head and put some books in her locker.
They went to the cafeteria to hang out there until they had to go to their first period classes.
They talked about different things, which teacher they hated the most, what they did after school yesterday, etc. Until Sammy brought up relationships then it got really quiet. Sammy, sensing the tension, decided to change the subject to the assembly today.
They talked about that until Sammy had to go to band and Lucy had to go to choir and Evelyn was left alone in study hall.
Evelyn sat down in her assigned spot and sighed, “Time to draw again.”
She got out her sketchbook and flipped to an unfinished drawing and started working on it again. She didn’t get very far before she found herself thinking about Lucy again, she seemed so sad when Evelyn missed what she said. She ended up getting lost in her own thoughts, then the bell caused her thoughts to dissipate.
She went to her assigned seat for the next study hall period, she sat next to Sammy, and waited for her.
She was counting down in her head, “and now.”
Then right on cue Sammy came running in, bag unzipped and only on one shoulder, books in her arms, and hair in a half ponytail. She put all her stuff on the table, panting.
Sammy put her books in her bag and zipped it up then started redoing her ponytail.
“You were admiring Lilith again weren’t you?"
Sammy sat down, bright red, and laid her head on the table while Evelyn was giggling.
“Make a move on her or something Sam.”
“Make a move.” Sammy turned to her, mocking her.
“You make a move on Lucy and THEN I’ll do it.”
It was then Evelyn’s turn to blush.
“Yep,” Sammy said as Evelyn joined in on laying their heads on the table.
They both just laid there before Sammy broke the silence, “Did we have math homework?”
“Why do we have to be so gay?”
“I think the same thing.”
“Perfect? Same with Lilith.”
They sat up and looked around before Sammy gasped.
“It’s her, without the rest of her gang.”
“Huh. That’s new,” Evelyn says before getting up and walking to the teacher.
Sammy watched, curiously, as the teacher and Evelyn talked.
Evelyn walked back and grabbed her stuff, “What are you doing?”
“You are gonna be sitting by your little crush, I’m switching spots with her today.”
“Yes,” Evelyn said, walking to Lilith.
“Hm?” she looked up from her book, making eye contact with Evelyn.
“Teach said we switch spots.”
“Okay?” Lilith said as she got up and got her stuff together.
Evelyn sat down in her new spot and Lilith walked over to the tomato at Evelyn's old spot.
Sammy was trying to hide in her book while Lilith sat next to her.
“Hey,” she said, setting down her stuff.
Lilith flashed Sammy a bright smile causing Sammy to blush more.
