The Owl (2022) - Redraw and process

OKAY SO I LOVE THIS NEW VERSION

so much has changed in this two years that i knew i needed to redraw this particular piece. I'm not a finger artist anymore, and my understanding of how digital art works has developed a lot, i mean, the owl (2020) was one of my first digital art pieces, so it's just natural, it's nice to see the improvement though!

I was looking for dynamism and kind of representation for the owl card powers, so i tried adding those shadows clinging to Dick while he moved discreetly around. (You can see I've consumed tons of tarot cards drawings on Pinterest i think, but in my defense, those are so pretty! Really inspiring!!)

I also wanted to add something more this time around, aka, the city, which is supposed to be not only a display of him moving around in secret but also a representation of his nature of caring for others, that's why the city is painted with yellow, warm tones overall, and on the contrary, the cold tones of his own powers, that are misterious and seem almost dangerous, like a predator ready to devore you, just waiting for the right moment hidden in the shadows.

Just FYI, if you're looking for the issue where Bruce adopts Dick, I keep meaning to change it in that post but then I fucked it up by reblogging before I edited afhkfhalkfh. I think its actually Gotham Knights #19 though, not 17. Its right around there for sure though.

The Batman cartoons are the reason I'm so fed up with the depictions of tough guy Batman we've been getting. In the thirty-plus years we've been getting Batman movies, we have never gotten the Batman of compassion that we see in his interactions with, say, the character Babydoll, or that we've seen in the cartoons, at all. The one who cares about and loves children, for example.

Take, for example, the cartoon which prominently features Babydoll as the villain.

In his cartoon interactions with Babydoll we get to see why he makes the decisions he makes and doesn't kill his villains. He believes that no matter how evil they behave that they deserve compassion because they're seriously broken (just like him). And that the only difference between him and them is that he made different choices. We get to see the Batman that cares, that is full of compassion for people in pain, and that's something we've never gotten in the film versions of him.

You can agree or disagree with his position, but that's why he acts the way he does towards the villains of Gotham, especially the ones from Arkham, and that's what I tell people who keep asking why he doesn't simply kill so and so...because killing them removes any opportunities for redemption.

Kalen!! My angst amigo! No angst today, sir? Wait, wait! I got one for ya! 

Today is Dick’s birthday. His first birthday without Bruce or Alfred. He keeps pacing around his apartment near the telephone, hoping it’ll ring. Hoping that when he picks it up, he’ll hear a familiar gruff voice wishing him a happy birthday.

The day goes by slowly. 

Dick cleans up a bit around his apartment. He does the dishes. He scrubs at the pizza sauce stain on the carpet. He quickly runs to the store (and immediately checks his voicemail as soon as he gets back home). He checks the time on his watch practically every five minutes. As time passes by, the hopeful flutter in his stomach starts to turn sour. 

He sits in a chair and stares at the phone, willing it to ring. 

His foot taps against the floor. His eyes stray between the clock and the phone. 

An hour goes by. 

And another. 

There’s still no ring. 

Dick shoves himself to his feet and angrily rubs at the corners of his eyes. His hand comes away wet. 

He grabs his leather jacket and roughly shoves his arms through the sleeves. He just barely remembers to grab his wallet and keys before he heads out the door, slamming it harshly against the frame. 

He hopes that... maybe... maybe the phone will ring while he’s gone. Maybe Bruce was just busy. Maybe he’ll call. 

It’s not until he gets back to his apartment later that night that he tentatively walks towards the phone. His palms are sweating and his heart is thundering in his chest. 

He picks up the phone to check and... a strong feeling of hurt washes over him, leaving him cold and numb. 

The phone never rang.

"Y'know what this reminds me of?" Dick asked Jason with a smirk that was mirrored by his younger brother, much to everyone else's great unease.

“The Great Gala Escape.” Jason reminisces, hand over his chest and eyes distant and amused.

Tim blinks once, twice, looks over to Cass, and gestures to them.

“Those are the faces of evil remembered,” he states gravely, Cass giggles and Damian huffs.

“I doubt that you would know Drake.”

Tim wrinkled his nose and Cass sighs, pats Tim gently on the shoulder.

“Nonsense,” she laments and Damian huffs.

“Whatever it was, I’m sure Grayson beat Todd.”

Jason rolls his eyes and leans back and drawls “Thank you for the vote of confidence, brat.” 

“Why is it,” Dick asks, leaning against the wall with an eyebrow raised, “that every time Jason and I mention something, you all assume it was a fight?”

Tim shrugs, looks vaguely uncomfortable, “Mostly because of the evidence that backs it up. You two almost never actually — get along.”

Jason looks like he rolls his eyes so hard that it must hurt.

“Well,” Dick says with a half-grin, “Contrary to both popular belief and the evidence, we did have like, a good chunk of bonding time before everything.”

The pause before everything, slight though it was, doesn’t go unnoticed. Jason’s grin tips towards something darker, before settling back into amusement. Dick doesn’t wince, grin firm in place and Tim shifts uncomfortably.

Cass hums, something in her eyes bright, “Oh?”

Jason sits up, stretches, “Yup!” he says, pops the ‘p’ and resettles himself. 

Damian scrunches up his nose and tilts his head, “Well I demand you enlighten us then.”

Dick laughs and ruffles his hair, “Alright then Dami, whatever you say.”

The Hale fire happened six years before the start of TW, and as we all know, the trauma of being burned alive so affected Peter Hale, he simply can not be held accountable for any of his actions in...

@bigskydreaming I... don’t understand what this is saying? 

First off, and I said this yesterday too, y’all invent so many situations for non-Scott Fandom that I’m not even sure if you know what’s real anymore. 

I don’t get the timing thing, because the show was six seasons, but the time in Beacon Hills that passed was less than 3 years (a little more depending on what kind of timejump you think happened in the finale since it’s never said). 

But what does Peter’s six years of trauma have to do with Scott? And I’d also like to point out that Peter showing Scott MERE SECONDS of his pain does not equate to Scott a) understanding the depth of what Peter went through or b) experiencing it himself. That’s a ridiculous argument and one y’all need to put to bed. 

Just because I’ve watched Handmaid’s Tale doesn’t mean I get what it’s like to be sexually assaulted and raped and it would be INSULTING and gross for me to claim that. 

Additionally, Peter’s trauma adds context to his actions, but it doesn’t excuse them, it never has. He killed Laura for goodness sakes, not one Steter or Peter fan has glossed over that and to imply that even a majority of them do is again condescending and insulting. 

I get y’all like to get hard for Scott and get the SJW kudos for supporting the lightest skinned half Mexican you could find, but maybe use actual facts and stop making up nonsense to attack others with?

no, i only read some spiderman 2099 (mainly when it tied into the exiles series). do you recommend it?
