it’s so funny when people say ginny was a crazy fangirl obsessed harry and the idea of harry, she didn’t actually ‘love’ him. when she was in fact the one person harry said made him feel like a regular person in the crazy whirlwind that was his life. like he literally says ‘it’s been like something out of someone else’s life…these last few weeks with you’ because him falling in love and mucking around like a teenager with her was one of the only times in the series he felt normal.

yes, ginny clearly had a crush on him when she was a child, but there’s very clearly a shift in the harry she first likes (the legend, the myth - the stranger who risks his life at age 12 to save hers) and the actual harry (the one who’s been so much shit but still has the kindest of hearts, some serious anger issues and can be hard to be around sometimes). as they both mature, she sees all of him, and understands who he is and why he acts the way he does, and grows to love him for the person he is, not the version of him she had in her head as a child. that’s what makes their love story so good.

Seeing that you are writing a Hinny fic I wanted to ask you what are things you like and dislike about Hinny?

thanks for the ask, im having a good time writing them (writing ginny especially). i think the only thing i dislike about hinny is their canon depiction, tbh, because of how rushed it felt. i've really enjoyed exploring ginny's potential as a character in her own right. someone who was brave enough to help stage a coup at school under voldemort's reign. her and harry share a recklessness that definitely wasnt touched on enough. they have fascinating intersecting trauma points too that could really help each of them heal. they are the only two people who truly knew the horror of riddle's diary and you'd think that might have bonded them as friends, at least. as much as i appreciated ginny calling harry out for that in OotP (where she kind of sasses him about being possessed by voldemort) i would have loved to see so much more of that ferocity come out in ginny. the kind of hinny dynamic i love to see is a fierce, loyal love where she's not afraid to challenge him, and harry is the number one fan to his hot, quidditch star wife ❤

1. What made you ship it?

I always enjoyed Ginny as a character; she had such a potential for growth and by the time OotP came out, I felt she had grown in her own journey, one that was parallel with Harry rather than being centered on him. OotP was the best in this sense: she was the one that would give him the harsh truth and also support him. By then, I shipped them whole-heartedly.

2. What are your favorite things about the ship?

They are soulmates. I love how they understand each other without saying anything (holding hands, how Harry never brings up Ginny's crush, how their first kiss just shows how in tune they are). I love how their romance just makes so much sense (despite those that try to say it came from nowhere, the hints were all there).

3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I hate, hate, hate that scene in DH where Ginny is arguing with her family because she wants to stay and fight, and Harry shakes his head when she looks at him for support. I get it, Harry said before he doesn't want to take any chance of anything happening to her; she is underage and should leave. But any development of their relationship has to get past this scene and I don't see this getting the attention I feel it should.

Steve Kloves did such a bad job writing Hinny that Hermione had to spell it out to the audience..

He could also have given Ginny her book personality and made movie Hinny likable.

But hey, at least the screen time was used on something good. Oh wait, muggle coffee shop girl. I love the HBP movie, but my god, it is so inferior to the book that it is crazy.

Movie Hinny deserves justice!

Another not-so-fun fact about Ginny in those movies. If you had only watched the movies, you would never have known that Ginny was actually good at quidditch. It was never shown. Other than her brief appearance in the montage that showed Ron being good. And not the character that went on to be a professional(?!?!?).

They didn't include her catching the snitch against Hufflepuff or her catching the snitch and thereby winning Gryffindor the Quidditch cup against Ravenclaw. Nor did they show her catching the snitch and winning the Quidditch cup for the second year in a row, and then kissing Harry in front of the entire Gryffindor house.

Yes, I'm still salty about this 14 years later, sue me.

not including ginny’s development in order of the phoenix was such a faux pas by the film writers. that book truly sets her up as the perfect future partner for harry, before even showing the romantic side of their relationship. it is critical to their development.

we get so many small but important moments where we see how brilliant she is. how she listens to him and doesn’t pressure him, or lecture him. she just listens. how funny she is, and playful and witty. she’s fun to be around, she makes him laugh, she takes the weight off his shoulders more than once, she’s tough and feisty. she calls him out on his shit when he needs it, which is something most of his friends are unable to do without resulting in silence, yelling or tears, their little shared glances when they find something funny, ginny ready and willing to risk her life to help him, and him being protective (?!!!), not to mention they bicker like an old married couple when they go to the department of mysteries like hello???)

"Brave Enough" what inspired you to write that fic? (1)

Brave enough was a gift for Harry and Ginny Fanfiction Extravaganza, and the prompt asked for missing moments, especially around the "lucky you" scene, so there you got, moments that, like then, Ginny had something to say to Harry and she struggled with it (and yeah, Ginny could have searched for Harry before, one-to-one, but she hesitated — Post-DH Ginny would not hesitate!).

When did you start shipping hinny

A bit of backstory in my venture into HP. I saw an ad for the reunion special, and thought to myself "Why have I never seen Harry Potter?". I then bought a HBO subscription the same night and watched PS. And it was love at first sight. I then watched a movie a day for the next week. And I ordered the books straight after finishing DH pt. 2. Whilst I waited on the books, I found this concept called fanfiction. And I started reading stories, which caused me to fall deeper in love with the world of Harry Potter. And when the books finally arrived, I couldn't put them down. Ever since I finished them, I have had PPD(Post Potter Depression) and tried to drown that with fanfiction. Which has worked pretty well so far.

Anyway, back to the question:

I think it was during CoS.

Ginny being so awkward around Harry is brilliant. The way she runs out of the kitchen when she see him is adorable. The way he panics over her (almost) dead body. Ginny defending Harry against Lucius is also precious. Unfortunately Ginny didn't really appear before OOTP again, so I didn't really think about them all that much during PoA and GoF. (I will never forgive Steve Kloves for that.)

In OOTP I just couldn't get behind Cho/Harry, so I started looking elsewhere for someone to ship Harry with. The obvious choice had been Hermione, but she was clearly in love with Ron and her and Harry had zero romantical chemistry during those movies. Maybe it was a subconscious decision made during CoS, but I started shipping Hinny. I cherished the few scenes they had throughout the rest of the movies, but I didn't LOVE them, like I do now.

That wasn't until I read the books. And oh my, the movies RUINED Ginny Weasley. She is such an amazing character, and truly the perfect woman for Harry. And without a doubt soulmates. I wish we had gotten more scenes with them in HBP, but I will take what I can get. Their kiss was brilliant(fuck whoever gave it to Ron/Lavender in the movies). Their banter was fantastic(fuck whoever cut that out of the movies). Their obvious strong love for each other(fuck whoever ignored that in the movies.)

I can understand if people who have only seen the movies don't ship them. Because they are severely underdone, and not reading the books first will forever haunt me. But book Hinny is nothing less than fantastic. I love them.

And fanon Hinny, whew. That is even better. The way some of the authors write them is breathtaking. I can't put into words how glad I am for discovering fanfiction. I don't know how I would have coped with the rough patches that has occurred during these past 14 months, if I didn't have fanfiction.

Steve Kloves or whoever is to blame for movie Hinny, made me crave some good Hinny content so much, that I started writing it myself. And whilst I wouldn't classify it as good Hinny content, at least not the first few drafts. It still clenched that need for more good content temporarily.

This answer got a lot longer than expected, and turned into a rant about Steve Kloves. But thank you so much for the ask anon :D

I hated that scene in DH too but a friend of mine lost her parents in her teens and when she explained it to me it made sense. She said when you loose the people you love so often you become over protective of the ones that are remaining. Even though you know they can carry their own there will always be the fear of what if and you do everything in your power to keep them safe.

Ooh, I get why Harry did it (when he can't consider the possibility of Ginny dying, more than of any other character; or when he runs to her instead of to Voldemort), but Harry got glimpses that Ginny wasn't laying low during that year at Hogwarts, he knew she was part of this war; it felt unfair to her character that he couldn't support her in front of everyone else. Most of all, I don't like them not discussing it afterward ("there would be time to talk later, hours and days and maybe years in which to talk" - but what did they talk?); safety is so fleeting, so fragile, that if Harry can't accept she will take risks and let her take them, then they wouldn't work anymore.
