Tips for hitchhiking in the U.S. Tip numero uno-just do it. There are a lot of awesome and kind people out in the world. Don't be so afraid. #2 Look decent: People don't want to pick up a slob that could possibly stink up their car. #3 Make a good sign: My friend and I opted for a sign that said We Showered. #4 Show those pearly whites: Smile, smile, smile. Look friendly, so people don't think you are going to kill them. #5 Find a good location: I found that standing in gas stations near the interstate ramp was a good location. This was simply because people could easily approach you and get a good look at you (so if you followed rule #2 this should be beneficial). #6 Be street smart: The world does contain some crazies, so use your brain- simple as that. And carrying some kind of weapon, such as pepper-spray wouldn't be a bad idea.
Random Happenings During Our Hitchhiking Journey: 1) Staying overnight at one of our ride's home in Panama City. Thank you Mike. 2) Getting two hitchhiking rides from the police. Thank you cops. 3) Being treated to a delicious sushi dinner from one of our rides. Thank you Chad. 4) Going to Mexico unexpectedly and seeing our ride's family home. And then road tripping back up to the states to see the white sand dunes during sunset where we slept in the car that night. Thank you Jesus and Jesus #2 (read with a Spanish accent). 5) Being told to go home to our moms and to go to church by one of our ride's grandma. Thank you Richard's grandma. 6) Sleeping in an 18 wheeler truck due to late loading and it being our last ride to California. Thank you crazy trucker man.... Those 17 hours just blew by. 7) Being offered food stamps, food, and having coins thrown at us just because we wearing our backpacks (I swear we didn't look that homeless) Thank you hobos and random trucker. 8) Getting excited to sleep outside somewhere random- but always end up getting a ride. Thank you Mike again and Jasmine. 9) Somehow managing to get VIP bands to get free booze in Austin, Texas. Thanks random guy in da club. 10) Having the pleasure to experience real Texas. Thank you Brazilians. 11)Being told we were crazy at least once a day. Thank you humankind.
