A much admired cultivar, Galanthus 'S. Arnott' is a relatively large and vigorous snowdrop. It was named after Samuel Arnott (born in Dumfries in 1852) who was a keen gardener and introduced this form into cultivation. It has a honey scent on a warm day and it naturalises well.

Growing happily on the edge of this gravel drive was Pentaglottis sempervirens (green alkanet, evergreen bugloss). This perennial has a tap-rooted perennial with a basal rosette of leaves. It was introduced into the UK from continental Europe as a garden plant by the seventeenth century.

A native to the Pyrenees Viola cornuta (horned pansy, horned violet, Pyrenean violet, tufted pansy) has naturalised on this roadside verge in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. This spreading evergreen perennial grows in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade.

Often found growing out of the cracks in old walls and pavements is Corydalis lutea (yellow corydalis, rock fumewort). This clump-forming, evergreen perennial is a garden escapee and produces clusters of bright yellow flowers from late spring into autumn in a sheltered site.

A lovely sight growing naturalised in grass were the flowers of Crocus speciosus subsp. speciosus (Bieberstein’s crocus). This small, perennial corm, produces large, solitary, long-tubed flowers in autumn, before the narrow leaves appear in winter.
