It’s May 14th, which means it’s National Underground America Day!
(yes this is a thing i’m just as surprised as you)
So…uh…enjoy this BRAND NEW, NEVER-BEFORE SEEN LORE YIPPEE!!!
No, I’m not just using this as an opportunity to promote my next long-form video, “An Introduction to COVERUP” (May 22nd); why would you even assume that?! That’s so weird and silly and out-of-character! Anyway!
Immediately after the conclusion of the Third Anomaly, Daedalus announced to his six loyal companions that, for the sanctity of the Natural World, a union had to be formed. An organization, one unlike any either world, Old or New, had ever known, was needed to not only combat the Unnatural plagues upon the Earth, but to protect humanity from them. Thus, on that very same night, the night of the twenty-fifth of January, 1644, the Clandestine Organization Veiling and Eliminating Risks to United Prosperity, or COVERUP, was born.
Daedalus, as the founder, adopted the role of Coverer, appointing his six companions as his trusted advisors, which formed the organization’s first Board. However, after such formalities were finalized, the First Coverer’s sights became set on expansion. A meager team of seven would be wholly unable to defend the people of Earth against the Unnatural World. So, Coverer Daedalus and his Board, on the morn of the first of the following month, ventured forth from Boston in the hopes of garnering followers throughout the New World.
Thus began the period known as “The Great Recruitment,” which lasted from the first of February until the first of August, 1644. In those six months, COVERUP had grown substantially. What was once a band of seven soldiers had become an army of two hundred and thirty. Though this was only but a percent of New England’s population, it was more than enough for Daedalus, at least for the time being. Yet, just as one problem was solved for the young organization, another arose. With two hundred and thirty individuals now in the First Coverer’s care, food, water, basic essentials, and, most pressingly, shelter was desperately needed. During their Great Recruitment, Daedalus had attempted to locate a suitable location to house not only themselves, but their organization’s future. Yet, nothing of substance was found in New England.
All seemed hopeless…until, that is, Daedalus consulted his “compass.” It told him of a grand city, one with crystalline structures and more space than they’d ever need, one deep underground and far from the public’s peering eyes, but it would be both difficult to reach and difficult to claim. It was a risk, but it was a risk Coverer Daedalus was willing to take for the survival of his vision.
So, on the fifth of September, 1644, Daedalus, with his two hundred and thirty followers behind him, began their trek westward. However, the area to the west of the colonies was nothing short of an untamed wilderness. Forests and cliffs and valleys and rivers and dangers of all kinds were plentiful, and those within COVERUP were privy to none of them. And those were but the Natural threats, to say nothing of the Unnatural beings the early followers encountered. Many lost their lives during “The Westward Voyage,” either due to the bitter cold of the winter months, or the frequent skirmishes with Natives tribes, or the many Unnatural entities encountered. But, despite the many, many difficulties, at long, long last, on the sixth of August, 1646, they made it. Daedalus, with his “compass,” had successfully brought his organization to their destination.
Many died along the way, yes, and their sacrifices were properly mourned. Of the two hundred and thirty that followed Daedalus, only a hundred and ten had completed the journey. But, for them, and Daedalus, the Westward Voyage was nothing short of a success as they stared at what was, supposedly, their salvation: today known as Mount Shasta. According to their Coverer’s “compass,” the base they’d searched far and wide for was beneath the mountain itself. So, upon reaching said mountain, COVERUP began searching for any kind entrance. Fortunately, that wouldn’t take very long. Unfortunately, the entrance would be revealed…by those who had already claimed it.
The creatures were monstrous; Unnatural in nature. The city beneath Shasta was their domain, and they’d ruthlessly slaughter any being who dared to challenge their rule. If this were any other tale, this history of COVERUP would end here…but this is no other tale. This is the tale of a group who, through nothing but their will and their faith, not in some higher being, but in themselves, overcame each and every obstacle before them. This is the tale of a man who saw the future, a man who took action, and a man who rallied others to his cause. This is the tale of an organization that, when faced with the Unnatural World, refused to go down without a fight. No, in this tale, this miraculous tale, Coverer Daedalus and his very first Agents defeated each and every monster that dared to defy them their salvation. In this tale, “The Battle of Shasta” was won by an organization who, despite slaying every monster before them, failed to lose a single soldier. In this tale, on the sixth of August, 1646, COVERUP achieved its first victory…and the Telos District was born.
I really need to get back to editing now.
I’ve been procrastinating for WAY too long.
Uhh…May 22nd or something I dunno.
Tune in tomorrow for more Tumblr Trivia Time!
