LOLA!! I would love to know a few of your favorite books?

abby im kissing you on the head (if consensual). a small selection of fiction faves (but tbh i have a lot more non-fiction faves):

1. one hundred years of solitude - gabriel garcia marquez (magical realism - its just so damn weird)

2. a little life - hanya yanagihara (will never recommend this book to anyone but i have never BEEN in such raw pain from a book before)

3. red white and royal blue - casey mcquiston (for obvious reasons)

4. winters orbit - everina maxwell (the forest scene. you will always live w me. kiem my angel 💫)

5. wolf hall - hilary mantel (power, history and politics yes pls)

6. chronicle of a death foretold - gabriel garcia marquez (I love GGM can you tell)

if you read my fic and you read a lot of gabo's work, I think you will see some familiar themes/motifs/ideas - his writing inspires me SO MUCH, along with the works of octavio paz and pablo neruda. those dudes literally inspire me every day 💖💫

Social trust promotes cooperation, wrote Kim Mannemar Sønderskov, professor of Political Science at Aarhus University, and Peter Thisted Dinesen, professor of Political Science at the University of Copenhagen, in a 2014 paper. The authors found that the level of social trust in Denmark is among the highest in the world and, moreover, that it dramatically increased over the 30-year period between 1979 and 2009. “In 1979, 47% of Danes expressed that ‘most people can be trusted’, whereas this share had increased to 79% in 2009.” The authors attribute this partly to “improved quality of state institutions, and a concomitant increase in citizens’ trust in these institutions”. The anti-corruption NGO Transparency International publishes an annual ranking of the world’s least-corrupt countries. This year, Denmark topped the table, tied with New Zealand. With a responsible government, politicians in Denmark enjoy a relatively high level of trust. When politicians “behave in an incorrupt manner,” write Sønderskov and Dinesen, “they send the signal that… most people can be trusted.” Many visitors to Denmark remark upon witnessing a level of trust in the country that is rarely seen elsewhere. Driving around rural areas in the summer, for example, you’ll likely spot unattended roadside stalls selling farm produce with only an honesty box to collect payment. It’s not uncommon, either, to see prams with sleeping babies inside parked outside restaurants or cafes: a widely reported story from 1997, when a Danish woman was arrested during a visit to New York City for leaving her baby outside a restaurant, illustrates this culture clash. The ease with which parents can leave children unattended in Denmark is a product of a society that is less anxious about its fellow citizens.

~ An honesty box is a method of charging for a service or a product such as home-grown produce and flowers, which relies upon each visitor paying at a box using the honour system. Such sites are usually unattended

~ I love finding these when walking in the country. They are so lovely and we tend to buy something from one when we find them. We’ve had home made fruit juice, fresh eggs, and jam!

Hands up if you've bought stuff from an honesty box? This particular one that we found this week was selling FIVE different types of homemade cakes!!

Awww, I love these. The first one I ever encountered was in Snowdonia on a very hot day when I was dehydrated. At just the right moment we happened upon a metal shopping basket in a shallow burn, which was keeping an assortment of canned drinks cold. You were free to take one so long as you popped 50p in a box. You see them at roadsides sometimes as well, selling jam or eggs or wotnot. Fantastic wee things.

lola! if you could act in a movie with glen, what would the movie be about and what role would you be playing?

this would never happen holly because a) i can't act to save my life (no, seriously. surfer dude #2 in the school play was a bust), and b) if i was even within a 50m radius of glen i think i would just keel over and die

so I guess if I just wasnt myself it would be some kind of silly rom com because that's what i love glen in the most and also we could kiss

Well now I'm curious about the non-fiction faves!!

hi sam, beloved!!

i'm actually a much bigger consumer of non-fiction reads, believe it or not! i find they don't fuck with my writing as much. that being said, i go through phases, so these might seem a little out of pocket because they're just the ones on the brain!

eggshell skull - bri lee (a judge's associate returns to the legal system as the complainant in her own case of csa - does a great job of portraying how impossible the justice system can be to navigate, even when you are intimately aware of the justice system). TW: csa, ed descriptions, self-harm.

flawed hero - chris masters (follows the defamation proceedings brought by a highly decorated SAS soldier against two australian reporters and their employer - covers both the damning evidence of war crimes and the psychological toll of a defamation proceeding on the parties, witnesses and those seeking justice). TW: descriptions of war crimes, violence.

long walk to freedom - nelson mandela (autobiography of nelson mandela from youth to becoming president, including his imprisonment - i read this a long time ago but it left such an impression on me because of mandela's sheer perseverance in the face of so much adversity). TW: racism, violence.

educated - tara westover (follows a woman growing up in a family of survivalist mormons - i know a lot of people don't like this book, but as someone who grew up in religion i found parts of it very haunting, and other parts inspiring). TW: abuse, neglect.

shoe dog - phil knight (memoir by the creator of nike. yeah i knowwww corporate america! but i liked how gritty this was and how it didn't try to be a 5-step how-to guide for overnight millions. i really loved the parts about nike signing rogue athletes and hoping for the best!).

there are heaps more and these aren't necessarily my FAVOURITES (that being said i've read most of these more than once so...)
