110. Honheehonhee- A is for Animal (Shouts, 2011)

HONHEEHONHEE shows crowds a good time while having a good time themselves Montreal-based indie-pop band to release debut full-length album in June By Sruti Islam / March 1, 2011 / Music

            Honheehonhee is eager to grab your attention.  From the curious spelling of their rainbow filtered band name (is it a play on honey honey, or simply demonstrative of consciousnesses aural play?), to the active cries on their synth laden sheets – this is a local five part act that wants to convince you they mean it.  It seems safe to comfortably position Honheehonhee within the ever-widening arms of indie pop, as they yelp out those addictively catchy “woah-oh’s” against the backdrop of smashing drums and raucous guitars.  Greg Halpin reluctantly claims, “We try not to take ourselves too seriously so in that sense I guess we could be considered more on the pop side of things.”  However, when asked to pick out a token indie pop ingredient, synth solo vs. catchy verse, Matt Raudsepp thoughtfully opts for, “a catchy verse part doubled by a synth. Variety is key.”  This in turn seems to ultimately hint at what to look forward to in their forthcoming record, Shouts.           

            Here is a local act to catch at its most exciting time – in its early bloom.  Honheehonhee are proudly conscious of an ever-blossoming musical culture in Montreal, and are in turn happy to find themselves within such a tradition.  “We are very appreciative of Montreal’s music culture,” says Stefan Gow.  “Our favorite bands come from here and there are so many great venues for independent artists. It’s an awesome scene and we’re grateful to be a part of it.”  As active members in Montreal’s underground music culture, Honheehonhee are more than happy to encourage its audiences towards local music and all it has to offer.  To the point where “We’ve been including some of the local acts that we've come to love on our HEEHONMIXES, which you can download for free on our site” says Glow. 

            Indie pop or not, the band isn’t aiming to sound like something particularly familiar, but more so particularly fun.  “To be honest, I don't really know what Indie Pop or Indie Rock is so I probably shouldn't even be talking about it” Halpin honestly claims.  “Sometimes I use those categories to describe our music but it's a risk - I'm always scared someone will know what I'm talking about.  I guess that means we're (or at least I'm) not conscious about it.  We mainly just try to rock out and have a good time.”  The concluding swells of, “so let us, so let us sing” in track, “We Only Go” only seems to re-enforce such a claim.  And not to mention the thought of seeing Erin Halpin bust out a glockenspiel on stage.  Yes, a glock-en-spiel.

            The band happily emphasizes the importance of the aesthetic of a live performance.  It’s one thing to hear a recording on that mixtape your friend made you, and another to visibly see the gushing energy of each track reflective in the sweaty tees and honest cries of every member.  They have a mantra, says Raudsepp.  “Two words we always shout at each other: "ENERGY!" and "FUN!" A mantra that Raudsepp then analogizes with a game of, “naked frisbee.”  What this means is that the show aims to be a bear all, free for all.  Everyone is welcome to play as long as they are willing to give all they’ve got and play – because that’s exactly what the band is sweating for.  “Audiences want to have a good time at a show, and the best way to ensure that is if we, the band, are having a good time ourselves,” says Raudsepp.

            There it is.  For a good time, call Honheehonhee.
