Horselord (Cavalier Archetype)

Hailing from the desert regions of the setting, today’s entry is all about esteemed mounted warriors whose mastery of horseback combat and maneuvers makes them legendary. While certainly not as imposing as entire cavalry regiments, a single horselord can be a deadly force, practicing hit and run tactics to disrupt and destroy their foes.

The concept of the desert-dwelling legendary rider is nothing new, with stories of Middle Eastern riders cropping up in all sorts of stories, not to mention the dedication with which breeders from the area practice their art, keeping lengthy pedigrees equal to or exceeding those kept in other nations and cultures for their most impressive specimens, their ancestors, and their descendants.

All of this proves that, regardless of culture, horses were almost universally seen as a status symbol, something that the powerful had that others did not, and granted them special advantages. Horselords certainly know these benefits, many of which they use in battle.

 Given the cultural associations that inspire this archetype, these horse-riders are famed for having some of the most agile mounts, their horses already having a predilection for speed, which only increases as they train them.

However, deserts are notorious for their harshness, and so these riders learn quickly how best to survive with their mounts, always packing plenty of supplies and foraging what they can.

They also train with their mounts to better fight alongside them, learning to stay mobile to avoid retaliation, and even how to use the momentum of their mount to add strength to their blades.

Additionally, they learn to strike effectively on the run while mounted, blazing past their foes without reprisal.

The most skilled among them can rush through entire swaths of foes, striking each in turn as they pass.

Interested in a mount-specialized cavalier from a desert nation in the setting? This is a good place to start. Naturally, this works best when your campaign has a lot of combat in open areas, and since the archetype grants it, you should definitely consider a spring attack build focused on harrying foes in hit and run attacks.

 To many horselords, not to be confused with the more setting-neutral horse lord rangers, their mount is more than just a companion that they have bonded with, each one has a lineage and a history, a pedigree that makes it a point of honor to protect them from harm.

  The Desert of Lost Souls is a notoriously dangerous place, home to raiders corrupted by the alien energies found there, as well as disturbingly pristine monuments not built by mortal hands, and patrolled by nightgaunts. Only the most daring riders with the greatest skill and the fastest horses, dare brave it, transporting messages and guarding travelers across it.

 The Horse Masters of Endiaush have been breeding their steeds for centuries, testing them for the field of battle during war, and in dangerous races in peacetime across wide stretches of desert and through treacherous rock formations. Some even try breeding their horses with equine supernatural beings to give their offspring an edge, and recently the foal of a horse and dragon horse hybrid has been stolen, with other horselords suspected of the crime.

 War has broken out with the humans of Pelash and the sand elves over a dispute of territory, the elves refusing to allow use of their sacred oases, limiting human travel in the region to however far their supplies last. One the one side, the elves have mastery over the desert itself, and are expert ambusher. The humans, for their part, bring elemental magic and the speed of their horses, slicing through elven ranks when direct fights unfold.
