So we're still working on addressing Springbok's potty issues. He is mostly good at peeing outside, but pooping is a lot harder - we think he may have been too harshly scolded/punished for pooping in the house previously? Because he doesn't want to poop in front of us, and doesn't like going outside either. We've gotten him to a few times, but he poops inside way more often so far. Chis, man.
So far, we're moving to crating him at night so he can't sneak off to go in the house. Using a cat carrier for now, but I just ordered him a slightly bigger wire crate and a bed for it. Last night was the first for that and went pretty well! He went in without a ton of fuss and took some treats in it. He cried a few times for ~20 minutes each time, but quieted down on his own. He went out first thing this morning with Joel and peed, then kept trying to sneak out to the hallway, so Jack took him out again and he pooped almost immediately!
We're also taking him out if he goes near the garage door or into the garage, and each time he goes outside, he gets a treat. If he potties outside, another treat. He's enjoying that a lot so far.
Jack starts doing work things again this week for a few hours a day, Joel will still be home. So Spring will go in the playpen Shilo was in, next to Joel's work area, so no sneaking off to potty somewhere. Think we're going to put a potty pad in the playpen too, just in case. And he'll get taken out on breaks and before/after going in the pen.
So, we'll see how it goes! We're kinda expecting a compromise between outside and hopefully potty pads, as it'll be hard to convince him on going out when it's storming or cold & snowy. But hopefully we can fix his training and get him doing better!
An explanation/diagram as to why people feel small dogs are harder to potty train. Dogs prefer not to potty within a certain distance to their food/water/sleeping areas but this certain distance depends on the individual dog’s size and preference. For the sake of this diagram, let’s say that dogs don’t want to potty within three body lengths of themselves from their food and water. For a little dog it is very easy to achieve that distance in a regular room. For a large dog, there may be no way to achieve that so they are more likely to hold it. Rooms have more distance relative to their body length for smaller dogs which leads to many people feeling as though little dogs are much harder to potty train, when it requires shifting your perspective a little bit to see how large the room is for such a little dog.
When owners come to me with housebreaking issues, my first question is always the same: “does he have a favourite spot?”
Weirdly, the answer is often no - until the owner thinks about it for a moment and then goes, “Wait, yes.” Literally almost every time. I don’t know why.
Followed by, “But I always clean it up and he keeps going back.”
And this is where we enter the wonderful world of pheromones. This post will most likely be a bit long, but if you or someone you know is having issues with housebreaking, or are just weirdly into gross dog habits, read on.
Stickers and organs
To understand how this all works, we gotta talk about what pheromones actually are. To put it really simply, think of them as stickers. Some stickers say “this is mine” and are put on things around an animal’s territory. Some stickers say “this is my friend” and are put on other animals. Some stickers say “boink me” and are put on the animals themselves during mating season.
Most animals, dogs included, are awesome at reading these stickers. Clear as day. They can differentiate them, understand them and (importantly) will adjust their behaviour appropriately. Remember that pheromones directly influence behaviour.
And most animals, dogs again included, have a specific organ on the roof of their mouth (the vomeronasal organ or VNO) which acts as a translator for all of these stickers. Which is why pheromones are so powerful for these animals, and why products like Adaptil and Feliway are so effective.
Humans are just ... awful at reading pheromones. There’s a ton of debate as to whether we even have a VNO. Which is why their importance is often totally overlooked by humans.
And why most puppy humans remain blissfully unaware of the pee sticker.
When dogs pee, they release a certain pheromone in the process. This pheromone basically says “this is your toilet. This is where you pee.” And that pheromone is what can make toilet training either quite easy, or very difficult.
This pheromone is very hard to destroy! Average soap and water will not get rid of it. Multipurpose cleaners will not get rid of it. Even most supermarket-brand pet stain removers will not get rid of it.
Today I had a customer argue the point (and inspire this post) by saying, “Well if you clean the stain and neutralise the smell, the problem is gone!”
(Said client was using baking soda in her dog’s toilet training. Whilst baking soda does have its benefits, the problem clearly was not gone or else we wouldn’t be having that conversation.)
Whilst the smell of ammonia does definitely contribute to the problem, the logic kind of falls apart when you consider 1) how much more powerful a dog’s sense of smell is, and 2) the fact that they literally have an entire extra organ devoted to finding pheromones. So:
Removing the pee sticker
So we know what doesn’t work, and that a dog who’s struggling with housebreaking has littered various pee stickers around the house that you can’t see or smell due to an evolutionary short straw.
The first thing you want to do is remove them. So get your hands on an enzymatic cleaner. There are several awesome ones on the market, but my personal favourite is Urine Off.
The microorganisms in Urine Off are able to not only remove the stain and odour, but break down that pheromone as well. Set some time aside to clean throughly with a cleaner like this one, remembering that urine scents and markers spread up to 3x the size of the stain itself.
Now, this alone will not stop the problem. If you don’t offer an alternative, the dog will just re-mark somewhere else.
So step two:
The alternative
What I would recommend is two things: a pee mat, and a housebreaking spray such as the one made by Nature’s Miracle (who, FYI, also make a kickass enzymatic cleaner). Even if you want your dog to go outdoors, a pee mat will help to control things in the meantime.
This is the pee sticker in a bottle. You spray this where you want your dog to go (i.e. on the training mat, or outside).
Now, this stuff ... stinks. It smells like ammonia (which, as I mentioned, does play a role in attracting dogs to certain spots). The good news is that you don’t need much of it, and hopefully won’t need it for too long. Once your dog associates the mat with a pee spot, you can shelf the housebreaking spray.
And if your dog pees in the right spot, praise them! Get really excited. Affirmation from you is the most useful thing in a dog’s housebreaking journey.
I’ll do another post on the training aspects of toilet training, but do keep these in mind in the meantime:
Don’t rub pup’s nose in it, get angry, or grab them when they’re peeing in the wrong spot. They will probably just hide from you next time.
Whilst I can say that these products are incredibly useful, they are not a fix-all and they are not an overnight miracle worker.
These are not generally expensive products; if money is an issue, try to utilise price matching if you can (remember shipping will be a factor though). The sprays cost me around $16 AUD total.
Remember that we can’t detect pheromones, so be vigilant and watch where your dogs are messing; you might be missing spots.
Be patient. These products help along the way, but your dog is still trying to work out the rules.
Keep in mind the peak pee periods: after waking, after meals, after play and before bed.
Mr. Baby Man is doing great today! He did poop in the garage once (Jack thought he was still laying down). But he peed and pooped outside this morning. And he asked to go out a couple hours ago and pooped outside for Joel and just asked again a minute ago and peed for me! Even more impressive, it was storming most of the day and is still misty raining, so it's very wet out. He's loving the new way to earn treats, and he's picking it up so quickly! Smart good boy. 💙

Get involved and make a lifesaving difference for animals. The concepts of “pack” and “dominance” in relation to dog training originated in the 1940s and were popularized by the Monks of New Skete in the 1970s. The model is based on a theory that “dogs are wolves” and since wolves live in hierarchical packs where an alpha male rules over everyone else, then humans must dominate dogs in order to modify their behavior.[68] However, recent studies have shown that wolves in the wild actually live in nuclear families where the father and mother are considered the pack leaders, and their offspring’s status depends on their birth order which does not involve fighting to attain a higher rank, because the young wolves naturally follow their parents’ lead.[69]

I’d spent an entire year listening to behaviour vets that said my dog had anxiety, and dosing him with medication that effectively did nothing to help him (they said he’d need to be on meds his whole life).
