One In A Medallion

Chapter 1: First Day

An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works

Summary: There's a smoothie shop right outside Moldak State Park. Familiar faces enjoy frequenting the smoothie shop. Smoothies and friendship await!!!!

Very specific, sit-com style modern AU of @heroesspirit! @wildsage00 came up with the idea and I made it into words hehe

Chapter 1 Summary: Eras has his first day at his new job. Twilight gets a smoothie on his way to work. Kiri drives a large number of children to school. 2.7k, fluff.

Eras steeled himself as Sky pushed the key into the lock and then twisted the sign to display OPEN. His first day at his new job just officially began. You can do this, he reminded himself. A smoothie shop couldn’t possibly be more difficult than an active war zone. Surely.

“Show time,” one of the other employees said. It was the teenager with pink hair— Legend, he remembered. He flipped the switch to turn the drive thru on then pressed a button on his headset to connect it. Beside them, Herb finished setting up the last of the smoothie equipment, head bouncing to the beat of the music playing through their headphones. They tapped on the order display screen in front of them and it flashed to life.

Sky joined Eras behind the counter and sat on one of the stools in front of the register screen. Eras rested his cane against the counter, low enough that it wouldn’t be seen by the customers, and settled on the other stool.

“You don’t have to worry about hiding your cane,” Sky said kindly. Eras glanced at him nervously, ears pinning back against his head.

Sky smiled softly. “I mean, I’m not going to make you show everyone who comes in, obviously. But I want to be sure you know this is a very disability friendly workplace. I’m disabled, and so are most of the people I hire.”

“Oh,” Eras said. His chest filled with warmth at Sky’s words, pushing out some of his insecurity. He was still learning to navigate his disabilities, so he wasn’t yet confident enough to share them with the world.

“No pressure,” Sky said. His ears wiggled slightly as he spoke.

Eras racked his mind for a proper response. Once again, he was saved by a ringing; this time, it was the bell above the door. The sound was enough to let the employees know someone was entering, but not too sharp of a noise.

Eras straightened his back, nerves alight in his chest, and glanced at Sky. Sky’s posture was relaxed, one leg casually resting over the other and his elbow on the arm of the stool. Beneath the end of the leg of Sky’s pants, Eras could see brightly colored, long socks with cartoon birds on them. He smiled, and turned to face the first customer.

“Hi, welcome to Gold Medallion! What can I get for you?” Sky asked.

The process really was simple. Sky put the orders into the computer and took the payments, then Herb and Legend made the smoothies. There was one drive thru order that Legend took while Eras was watching, but he didn’t focus too much on that. He wouldn’t be trained on drive thru for a few weeks.

“You think you’re ready to try on your own?” Sky asked.

Eras took a deep breath. “Yes.”

Sky beamed. “Great! I’ll watch the first few while you get the hang of it, so don’t worry if you forget something.”

“Okay,” Eras said. There was no one else in line, so Eras rehearsed the words in his head with the background noise of smoothies being blended.

Hello, welcome to Gold Medallion. What can I get for you?

Of course. Do you want to add anything to that?

Can I get a name for the order?

Your total is… Are you paying with cash or card?

The door bell rang. Eras watched as a man in a cowboy hat walked through the door and made his way to the counter.

“Hello, welcome to Gold Medallion. What can I get for you?” Eras asked.

“Can I get one mangonada and one grassamel, please?” The man asked. He had an accent Eras couldn’t place. His voice was smooth— Eras had to hold back a smile at the unintentional pun.

“Of course. Do you want to add anything to those?”

“Nope, just as they come,” the man said with a smile.

Eras tried to smile back, but he was pretty sure it didn’t work. He was too focused on pressing the correct buttons on his screen.

“Can I get a name for the order?”

“Twilight.”

Another last minute addition to my whumptober plans - some fic based on the comic @heroesspirit ! It is not LU, it is very pretty, Legend has hair that looks like bubblegum flavoured candyfloss, and the comic starts with Warriors AND our favourite captain has a pet cat. And a pet raven. There’s not a whole lot of comic yet, though, so characterisation will be messy and its definitely au. In fact it branches from the 4th or 5th frame of the most recent update - chapter 1 part 7! (Though we’ll cover a little of the 3rd)

I said all this about Warriors to sell people the comic, but now I’m going to write Legend angst (Wars... might show up in part 2??? If I write it). So. Buckle in and get ready for some angst on the theme of “No one’s coming”!

“There you are.”

The soldier’s sword was already drawn - without even a moment’s hesitation Link bolted from his hiding place. Again the soldier called out for him to stop, but fear drove up his heart.

Link had been being hunted for hours now, and everything was on edge; he bolted through the ruins, looking for any escape. To one side was a forest but a raven - clever, too clever birds - circled overhead. Knowing the omen of death for what it was, Link kept within the ruins. No need to tempt fate, not when he was minimally armed and in a strange, peculiar place.

In his home he might have been abandoned to struggle by himself, but here he was truly alone.

He could hear nothing over his heart pounding in his ears, bolting left and right, jumping fallen walls and weaving through crumbling arches in a desperate attempt to shake his tail. The Cane of Byrna is clutched to his chest. Legend is tempted to use it - or more so his cape - but he dares not use his precious magic when he knows not what bought him here, or if the situation becomes more dire.

Like it just did; another few soldiers appeared from the crumbling ruins.

Panic great ever tighter in Link’s chest, squeezing his organs until he choked.

Still he ran, desperate to escape. To the left, the right, spinning around and using every trick he knew - every trick but disappearing.

Too late did he realise what was being done - between them the soldiers were hounding him in a /direction.

With no time to correct Link could only hope the trap was minimal. He nearly froze but, no, no, keep running until you truly have no other choice. Run and run and run and run until your heart gives in or you manage to escape!

He rounded another corner, looking to escape his mistake.

Instead he found himself face to face with what had to be the rest of the unit swords all pointed at him.

They were not soldiers as he knew them, but it was all the same regardless. Blades pointed at him, left defenceless, refusing reason.

Link held the Cane tighter, holding it up before himself as a shield. Against this many opponents it would not save him, but... But what other choice did he have?

His wrist tapped against the Medallion he used to clasp his cloak.

Bombos.

He... He...

These were people, still just people. Mind controlled or manipulated or even just cruel people. He... Using the Bombos Medallion against them...

A sword crashed into him. The magic from the cane deflected the blow, and drained his strength a little faster.

If... If he wanted to live...

Link took one hand from the Cane, grasping the Medallion with his right hand. Shuddering in terror he gripped it tight, and called upon the fires.

Screams echoed from the soldiers; Link trembled as the fires faded, whimpering with his back pressed to the wall. Having run so far and used the cane so long, he could already feel the drain on his strength.

He could also see, however, that not all of the soldiers had perished in the flames.

Some were still screaming, others were getting back up.

Link did not have the magic to cast the spell again; he had to escape. Nobody would come for him, nobody ever did. All he had was seconds - until the soldiers killed him, until his heart burst through his ears, until his trembling body gave out, he was not sure.

With a quick move he wrapped himself tight in his cloak. Already he could feel it gouging into his emergency reserves, the final few drops of magic that he would never dream of using except when a crisis arose.

Had to be fast then.

That was okay; Link was good at fast.

Sparks POV using mirror pronouns

Legend is also present and maybe a Zelda to mix things up

Optional: Sparks using mirror pronouns is already established (i.e. they aren't just telling people for the first time) but perhaps it's been a while since xe's been around people who don't use predominately he/him and so it's a nice little "oh yeah... Gender :) " moment

This is set in my smoothie AU or @heroesspirit. This is not technically canon to the smoothie AU because Sparks uses they/them in Heroes Spirit and in the smoothie AU. EDIT: I changed my mind mirror pronouns Sparks is now canon to smoothie au :)

I've never written from the perspective of someone who uses mirror pronouns before, so this was fun! The pronouns Sparks uses for xyr internal monologue change based on the last person xe talked to or the last pronoun used for xem :D

Sparks leaned on the counter with one elbow, and with their other hand they pointed at Sky. “I need a smoothie. It needs to be something weird.”

“Grassamel?” Sky suggested.

Sparks shook his head. “Nope. No. I need this smoothie to do something to my insides.”

Sky leaned back and gave Sparks a weird look. Sparks did not break eye contact. 

“This was the whole way here,” Zelda said. “I have no idea what her deal is.”

Sparks blinked. A flutter of euphoria burst to life in her chest. She glanced at Zelda, then back at Sky. Neither of them reacted to the pronoun. The casual, automatic usage made the euphoric feeling grow.

“Is that Sparks?” Legend called. 

Sparks flung themself onto the counter and leaned over to look at Legend. “Hey, c’mere!”

Sky threw his hands up in mock offense and walked away from the counter as Legend approached. 

“Hi guys!” Legend said as they wiped their hands with a smoothie-stained towel. “What can I make for you?”

“I want the fruitcake!” Zelda said. 

Legend nodded and tapped the ordering screen. “One fruitcake, got it. What about you, Sparks?”

“Legend. My friend. My roommate. My partner in crime.”

“That was one time and I didn’t even do anything, I just stood there while you-”

“Not in public!!” Sparks rushed to cut him off. He and Legend both glanced nervously at Zelda, but she just sighed with a resigned look on her face. 

“Anyway.” Sparks cleared their throat. “I need something weirder than the Grassamel. Charge me for whatever you need to, I don’t care. I need to feel something.” Sparks collapsed onto the counter. 

“Uh,” Legend said. “Are they okay?” 

Sparks groaned.

“There was a small mishap at the park. It was absolutely not worth being this dramatic about-”

Sparks groaned louder.

“-but you know how she is,” Zelda finished with a giggle. 

“Yes. Yes I do. I think I have something in mind.” Legend pat Sparks’ head twice. “Together or separate?”

“I’ll pay,” Zelda offered. 

“My hero,” Sparks mumbled into the counter. 

“Just remember this next time I need someone to help with my insect demonstrations.”

Sparks slid off the counter and collapsed onto the floor.

"Long day" with Hero's Spirit for the three sentence game?

(Characters from @heroesspirit. I'm imagining this set in the era of the Brothers fic)

It was the end of a long, long day of running through the swamp. They were trying to stay ahead of the other group while also searching for more medallions, and also trying to keep each other fed, warm, and safe. Legend was exhausted, frankly. The damp air was making his joints ache, and the constant running was sending spikes of main through his muscles.

He wanted a break.

"Ugh!" Sailor flopped onto the soggy ground. His clothes hit the wet grass with a squelch that made Legend flinch.

"Fuck," Sailor said eloquently.

"Here." Captain offered Sailor a hand and pulled him up.

Sailor tried to twist around to see how much of his back was wet, but he couldn't quite reach and ended up looking like a dog chasing its tail. Legend stifled a laugh and then stifled a wince as he stepped over to help. He pulled Sailor's tunic so he could see and grimaced at how wet it was.

"You're gonna want to change," Legend said.

Sailor groaned again.
