I'm in a limbo where I'm a bit too sick to do any meaningful work but a bit too okay to just lie in bed all day and sleep so here are my notes on Chinese speaking test (HSKK Advanced) part 1.
And yes, my casual chinese handwriting looks like that. No, I'm not gonna take any notes. That being said you can tell me if you think my chinese handwriting is good or bad. Just curious.
I'm just relieved it's over and I don't have to study so much anymore.
The listening part seemed a lot more difficult than all the mock tests I've done. I usually score high in the listening (before the dialogues with two questions start), but I don't think that was the case yesterday.
For the reading part, I might have gotten a few points for the "complete the sentences" and "put in order" tasks, but reading the paragraphs with the time running out was a disaster as usual.
I did somehow manage to speak stutter for two whole minutes in the "talk about the picture" and "answer the question" parts of the HSKK though, though I'm sure whoever grades it will have a good laugh.
Me *looking at a picture of three suitcases*: "Summer vacation has finally arrived! Work is very tiresome, so I really need to rest. I am going to travel to China, I am really excited! I am on my way to the airport right now. I have three pieces of luggage to check in." *looking at the countdown timer, seeing almost half the time is still left, panicking a bit* "er... that's a lot of luggage... er... because I'm not traveling by myself, I am going with two friends... my suitcase is the red one... er... theirs are..." *forgetting how to say "gray"* "...the other ones... er... we are in the taxi....... I...... must remember to bring my passport....... and... the plane... ticket"
Pondering whether or not to re-take the HSK4 exam (without the speaking this time) since I failed to meet the passing mark by around 10 points last time and I refuse to believe that the past few months of studying wouldn't be able to give me that boost.
I'm still sick but I'm doing good academically! at least I think!
Done with my pali assignment! (on day 4 morning btw)
Also done with my HSKK class!
I'm still studying Japanese at N3 level because I'm not ready for N2 yet... Hyouka is helping me along.
A new semester for HGU UNITWIN starts tomorrow! Worldview studies and Health Psychology here I come!!!
I finished "The Con Job" which is a Leverage novel and it was honestly disappointing since I'm rewatching the show. But I'm still gonna pick up "The Zoo Job"
On this week's HAIYUU book club activity: We're reading the little prince! Last week my friend chose that book and I was astounded by the amount of people who thought it was a children's book(??!??) Anyway, we're gonna discuss translations too since we decided to let the readers pick the language of the book they wanted. Personally, I'm reading it in Chinese.
My tonsilitis still persists. Now I have body aches. Idk when I'll get better but god, it better be soon.
Today I wrote my HSK4 and HSKK 4 exams, which as it turns out are 2 separate exams with 2 separate certificates and doing badly on one of them doesn't affect the other ones score as I'm told.
Since I was left feeling absolutely out of my depth in the beginning, I decided to write about my experience with doing the HSK(K) 4 exams online!
There were a few options for the exam formats. Do note that these formats may not be available everywhere depending on the region and the availability of the exam centres.
Paper-based: Your usual end-of-year or midterm exam format. Pen and paper, nothing particulary out of the ordinary. This type has its own pros and cons, as you have to know your characters really well, especially for the more advanced levels.
Online onsite. You go to a specific exam location, which is usually at a university or a language learning centre, where you sit at a computer and do the timed exam using special software.
Online at home. As far as I know its the same as option 2, expect you do it at home.
Nothing too surprising? Wait until you get to the online HSKK part.
The HSKK
I did the online onsite format, but I naively assumed that the exam would be with an actual in-person examiner.
Little did I know that it would also be online, and that I would have to speak my answers into the computers microphone. It wasn't too bad at the beginning, but then when we had to prepare for the individual answers it was chaos.
And not the good kind.
Trying to say my answer into the microphone in a room full of other people also trying to do the same thing, with my microphone also picking up other people's answers and me being totally thrown off and struggling to gather my thoughts led me to this conclusion within the first 5 minutes of this exam: I am so not passing this.
It is what it is, and once I get my results back (in 60-90 days apparently???) I can try to figure out what to do next. In the mean time I'll be focusing on my chinese studies and see about picking up another skill while I'm here.
If anyone also did their HSK(K) exams recently, what was it like for you?
- Started taking HSKK (Chinese Speaking Proficiency Test) advanced prep class :D We're all advanced learners in here with HSK 5/6 levels so the teacher is speaking in Chinese the whole time and I'm so happy that I can understand 99% of what she's saying but also I found out my Chinese speaking has really diminished 😭 Thank god I was able to introduce myself and answer her questions in Chinese but the mock tests are kicking my ass no doubt.
- J.Test (Japanese language exam) released the correct answers and I got enough marks to pass JLPT N3 level!! I'm still waiting for formal result announcements but I'm pretty sure I got it!! :D
- Started teaching a new basic Chinese class so now I have to teach 4 days per week. It's a bit tough but I think I'm making it work?
- the level 1 Chinese class I'm teaching is going to end in February so I'm gonna have to prep for the level 2 class and THEN prep and record my basic Korean classes. I'll tell y'all how it goes
- I have 100% grade but still missing classes for Pali Diploma and will have to make up a lot in the future. Thank god they don't grade attendances 😭
- I have a slight fever right now so I'm chugging Lipovitan-D to keep me going. I have a tarot session booked this afternon and a chinese class to teach so can't really rest Unfortunately :/ but Dimension 20 FHJY is helping me with my mood.
