I know kdramas are shot on extremely tight schedules so I don't really mind that there is not enough focus on the cinematography because there simply isn't enough time.
At the same time however, when there comes along a drama that is skilfully written and very precisely shot, I cannot help but lose my shit over it.
I wouldn't call Flower of Evil's cinematography beautiful. There are no stunning shots of scenery and aesthetically pleasing settings. But I still consider it impressive and brilliant because this is one of those few times where the plot and cinematography come together so well, they become extensions of each other. You can have a beautifully shot drama and it would still feel flat because the script just doesn't mesh well.
Flower of Evil makes such good use of visual framing devices to complement the story. For instance, the focus on the wedding rings. The presence of them and the removal of them is just as powerful as any other line. The way the director zooms in on faces not just so that we get to see how pretty the cast is, but also because expressions and body language are equally powerful narrative devices and as the audience, when you get such an intimate look at them, it makes you feel so much.
The latest episode made me realize that from the start, we too have been getting to see Hyun Soo as Ji Won has always seen him. He says one thing but we get to see how he feels. The disconnect between his own emotions and utterances feel all the more powerful because, you don't have to hear him speak to believe. You see it and therefore you believe. I mean, this why despite all the odds being stacked against him, and a horribly tragic childhood, Hyun Soo feels so tragic and compelling and someone you want to root for.
And slowly but surely, Hyun Soo too is finally getting to see Ji Won the way we already do. Her love which is so apparent and transparent to us takes him a while to realize because, in a way, he too sees her thru a certain lens, a POV if you will. The way we connected the dots about him, he's connecting them about her. And this is just not because conversations are had. Rather, it's the cinematography that helps you understand better where she's coming from and him realizing where she's coming from. Hyun Soo's gradual progression from Hee Seong to Hyun Soo is largely communicated to us through visuals storytelling. And it's not the clever kind of storytelling that seems almost abstract at times. Rather it's a very thoughtful and uncritical view of a story about a wife, her husband and a look into the progression of their relationship - as skeletons fall out of the closet. I feel like this is why even though it is billed as a thriller, there is so much to unpack because the cinematography isn't only focused on the gory aspects of plot. Instead, it pays more attention to the characters and their relationships. This is true of not just Hyun Soo and Ji Won, this applies to almost everyone in the cast who plays an important role. For example, Ji Won's team gets limited screen time and even then, you have a very good idea of who they are and how they too are full characters, not just cast fillers. So much is said simply through the way it is shot and so nobody feels flat or cartoon like.
Having a good eyes for scenes or shots is one thing, but its completely another thing to understand the story and characters in such a way that the audience gets to see so many multitudes. And this ability is what separates good directors from brilliant directors. I'm just blown away by how much of Flower of Evil I enjoy not just because of the script, but because of the cinematography as well because there's just as much show as there is tell.
