Wasp and bee post!
Happy and sleepy pantaloon bee in my moms garden!
Flyer hymenopteran, the giant murder hornet from Microgame #2 Chitin: I (Robert Manns, The Space Gamer 23, Metagaming, May-June 1979)
These guys appeared identical to cuckoo wasps in every regard except for their size compared to others I’ve seen locally--they were tiny tiny, like the size of fruit flies. Juveniles, maybe?
UPDATE: https://ellphia.tumblr.com/ informs me
These are adult chrysididae. They are holometabolous so the juveniles do not resemble the adults.

This is a velvet ant. It is not an ant. It is a wasp. This is a female and she is flightless. The males can fly and mainly feed on nectar. These wasps are parasitoids meaning the females lay their eggs inside the larvae of other ground nesting wasps and bees. The larvae feed off of the innards and then bust out in chestburster-like glory. You do not want to get stung by one of these. Beautiful animal though. #velvetant #wasp #insectsofinstagram #insectagram #insects #arthropod #arthropodsanonymous #forestedge #nature #naturelovers #velvet #hymenoptera #hymenopteran #NorthAmerica #NorthCarolina #Coweeta #appalachia #appalachianmountains #Nantahala
