I said I have a rules problem, right? I am literally muttering ‘Spiritual Weapon is a bonus action’ at my screen in agitation.
Because it is. It’s a really good spell, and it’s a bonus action. Literally the only downside they built in is that it can only move 20ft a turn, which means that if you’re in an open fighting arena then the bad guy can easily keep away from it, but - depending on the DM - it might get an attack of opportunity.
But it’s a bonus action. So if the Cleric wants to cast Spiritual Weapon, hit someone with it and then go apeshit on someone with their mace, then they absolutely can do that. Sure, they can’t cast another spell higher than a cantrip (although they can cast a cantrip, so they can sacred flame someone that turn instead of attacking with their mace if they want to stay back and just bring down the wrath of their god on someone’s head), but Spiritual Weapon stays there and next turn they don’t have to cast it again, they just make it murder people. Unless the people have moved more than 20ft away from it.
But yes, I know it doesn’t feel like it should be a bonus action, but it is. It’s not even concentration... It just... is. For a minute, the Cleric just has an extra attack every turn, that moves rather slowly.
This rant brought to you by a pint of pepsi max.
