Christmas Vacation Part 2
We wandered around Barrio Alto both during the day and at night. It’s nice to see a city change when the sun goes down. The portuguese are very nice, accommodating people. The streets are filled with little restaurants.
Some of the sidewalks are very narrow, even the streets where the streetcars or “funiculares” buzz down. Make sure you mind your surroundings, there are blind corners and lots of peds. Be careful.
Highly recommend you visit Alfama after dark and find a nice little restaurant to listen to some Fado at night. One of our favorite experiences while travelling so far. Can’t recommend it enough.

Roman Spain was one of the first provinces beyond Italy; it took two centuries to conquer fully (starting with an invasion against the Carthaginians in 206 BCE) and remained under Roman rule far longer than most of the Western Empire (northeastern Spain was still under nominal Roman control c. 474 CE.) Hispania was among the wealthiest and most Romanized of the empire’s provinces for over 500 years.
