Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, so let’s bring awareness and celebrate with some animation LGBTQ+ history! This look back shows how far representation has come, from stereotypical beginnings to the fully-realized human beings, although there is still a lot of progress to be achieved.

Long after the South Park film in 1999, ParaNorman in 2012 depicted Mitch Downe as a gay football player, the second American-made film with a gay character in over a decade. Mitch’s sexuality is something you only find out at the end of the film. Chris Butler, one of the film’s directors, said that because the movie’s message says to not judge other people, “then we’ve got to have the strength of our convictions.”
