Today’s intervention: therapeutic games. Because people forget how to play together and it’s a great way to get parents to play with their teenagers. #counseling #therapylife #therapy #familytherapy #ifptherapist #gametime #communicationskills

3:00am... Beep beep beep. This now completes our test of the emergency crisis response program. In the event there are any additional family crises, please contact your nearest law enforcement agency or hospital or spiritual guide, as the current crisis response therapist had passed out from pure exhaustion. This concludes our broadcast. Thank you. #ifp #ifptherapist #ifptherapy #crisisresponse #therapyhumor
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in a room like this or how many hours I’ve sat waiting with someone while the staff do their reports and make their final evaluations. I probably can count the number of patients I’ve seen in rooms similar to this one, but I don’t have enough fingers or toes for the words of reassurance I try to give to the anxious, depressed, or angry clients who are second-guessing the necessity of such “help.” I definitely can’t count the cups of coffee I’ve sipped while trying to soothe my own frazzled mind as I work out contingency plans in case my clients aren’t admitted for treatment. Nor can I count the number of times I’ve been asked “do I really have to be here” or “are they going to be able to fix my kid?” Questions to which I never seem to have the wanted answer, but hopefully always give the honest one. Therapy is a crazy life because we deal in human pain and suffering, we dive down deep into people’s messes and try to help drag them back up to the surface of an abstract thing we call stability. Along the way we learn to identify patterns and rhythms in behavior so that we know when a person is having an off day. Or, more importantly, so we know when there is no other choice and we, the professional helpers of the world, have to seek additional aid because our clients just aren’t safe on their own anymore. So while there are hundreds of moments I can’t count, I CAN say that I remember every time I’ve had to make the call to seek medical help for a client. And I do know that for every time I’ve second-guessed myself, wondering if I have done more harm than good, I’ve also gone home praying for my clients to be okay, that I have put countless miles on my car, hoping the people I work for come out healthier and stronger than they were they night I brought them into a room like this one. #therapist #therapylife #counseling #counselorlife #ifp #ifptherapist #suicideprevention #psychiatry
