Benedict Cumberbatch's Grinch (2018) Becomes Netflix Global Sensation

Benedict Cumberbatch's $540M Remake Of 59-Year-Old Classic Is Now A Netflix Global Streaming Sensation

It ranks 2nd for today.

"The Grinch has become a global streaming sensation on Netflix. The 2018 animated film, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of the Grinch, is the third screen adaptation of the classic 1957 children's book, How the Grinch Stole Christmas! by Dr. Seuss, following the original 1966 animated TV special and the 2000 live-action film starring Jim Carrey.

Now, seven years after its original release, The Grinch (2018) ranks second on Netflix's Top 10 movies in the world for today, December 22, per FlixPatrol. It ranks below The Great Flood in first and above Jim Carrey's How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) in fifth place. Another Christmas movie, My Secret Santa, ranks seventh.

Also appearing on the chart are Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, Murder in Monaco, The Croods: A New Age, the Jake Paul vs. Anthony Joshua fight, Dave Chappelle: The Unstoppable comedy special, and A Time For Bravery in 10th.

For this week, The Grinch (2018) ranks in Netflix's Top 10 in a total of 78 countries, located in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. While it isn't available on Netflix in the United States, The Grinch is also streaming on Peacock.

Directed by Scott Mosier and Yarrow Cheney (The Lorax), The Grinch features Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of the grumpy, green-furred, and cave-dwelling recluse who hates Christmas and tries to ruin Whoville's holiday by stealing all the town's decorations and gifts, with the help of his pet dog Max. Other than Benedict Cumberbatch, the voice cast also includes Cameron Seely, Rashida Jones, Kenan Thompson, Angela Lansbury, Pharrell Williams as the narrator, Tristan O'Hare, Sam Lavagnino, Ramone Hamilton, Scarlett Estevez, Michael Beattie, and Bill Farmer.

The Grinch (2018) received mixed reviews at the time of its release, resulting in a 60% Rotten Tomatoes score, with critics claiming that it refreshes Dr. Seuss' classic with vibrant animation and offers a kid-friendly retelling that entertains younger audiences, but doesn't do much to significantly expand on the original story's legacy.

The movie has an equally mixed 54% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, though The Grinch did gross $540 million at the worldwide box office to become both the highest-grossing Christmas movie of all time, and the highest-grossing Dr. Seuss film adaptation.

In addition to The Grinch (2018), the original animated TV special, How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966), is also streaming on Peacock, while Jim Carrey's live-action How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) is streaming on both Peacock and Prime Video."

So, it would appear that despite the numerous attempts, The Grinch 2018, is indeed NOT dead. Ah...it's Christmas!

Review - THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS

Synopsis: The real day starts after the two-legged Manhattanites leave for work and school. That’s when the pets of every species begin their own daily routine. From hanging out with each other, trading humiliating stories about their owners, auditioning adorable looks to get better snacks, or watching Animal Planet like it is reality TV, their days are as full as their human counterparts.

In one particular apartment building the top dog, Max (C.K.), is a quick-witted Terrier rescue who’s convinced he sits at the center of his owner Katie’s (KEMPER) universe. That all begins to change, not for the better, when she brings home Duke (STONESTREET), a sloppy, massive mess of a mongrel with zero interpersonal skills. When this reluctant canine duo finds themselves out on the mean streets of New York they have to set aside their differences and unite against a fluffy, yet cunning, bunny named Snowball (HART), who’s building an army of pets who’ve been abandoned by their owners and are out to turn the tables on humanity. Plus, they have to avoid the animal control officers on the look for them…all this and make it home before Katie returns at dinnertime.

Review: First, the 3D is crisp, immersive, and did not detract from the enjoyment of  THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS. Did it add anything where I recommend see it over 2D? Yes, if you are a fan. It’s good! However, if you are taking a posse of kids maybe you want to save the extra cost for the 3D for the snack counter. I loved the 3D visuals for the Minion short, “Mower Minions,” which plays before the feature. Keep an eye on the gnome!

What’s not to love about the concept - how our pets spend their days when we’re away from home! There are plenty of gags that flow naturally from the different species represented in the film. There are enough jokes and gags for young and old alike. What at its core is essentially a buddy movie, Max & Duke, an unlikely duo, are on a quest to get back home (sounds like a Disney plot) after Duke attempts to get Max out of the picture lands them both on the wrong side of the fence. It may not be “Lethal Pet,” but the slapstick, comedy, and the group of anti human pets does have a certain feel to it. Duke’s actions have both canines on the run from animal control. They survive a roughing up by a pack of feral alley cats.Then they encounter a gang of mixed species discarded pets, looking to overthrow their previous owners, lead by a psycho bunny Snowball (HART). Back at home their pet neighbors band together to try and find them,  and help them find their way home. Small set pieces are seamlessly wove together, some supporting cast getting more screen time than others, but It all comes together in an amazingly hysterical climax. There are some sentimental and touching moments along the way that nicely ground the tale, and that’s something we’ve come to expect from the animated features by the folks at Illumination Studios. Based on their films like “Despicable Me,” “The Minion Movie,” and now THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS, these filmmakers have proven their abilities as solid storytellers.

In terms of the vocal talent, Kevin Hart’s Snowball & Jenny Slate’s telenovela watching Gidget steal the show. They are over the top and out of control, and  at times I laughed so hard my sides hurt. Equally as funny, but with less screen time, Albert Brooks voices Tiberius, a grumpy red-tailed hawk who helps Gidget and friends find Max. He does an old Jewish ancient for the hawk that sounds more Mel than Albert Brooks, and the character animation nicely accentuates the vocals. There are scenes where the hawk hungrily gazes upon the other animals he is aiding that is hilarious. Louis C.K. is adequate as Max. He's done some writing for animation,  Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist show, but I believe this is his first time behind a microphone creating a character. His vocal performance is not as strong as his co-stars. He comes across as a happy version of his TV series persona. It’s funny, but it’s a joke that gets old quick and too often Max fades into the background.

Technically THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS is brilliant. The filmmakers and programs have painstakingly created hairs and textures that give each character their own unique design and look. You notice the different aspects of the dog breeds’ hairs, the birds’ feathers, and the texture of the scaled creatures. It’s a real wow, as is their artistic representation of the Manhattan skyline at night. Those were some of the best 3D moments.

THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS is an entertaining, rollicking, good time that is sure delight the entire family. If you’ve ever had a pet, regardless of the species, you’re sure to find something here that will tickle your funny bone. With the added bonus of the Minion short, this is the most fun I’ve had at an animated movie so far this summer.
