You sobbed quietly into your pillow. This was not how it was supposed to go.
You were supposed to be happy. You were supposed to bring a light into this world and yet you couldn’t. Not anymore.
Everyone was so excited. This was supposed to be the first baby born into the line of Durin in 80 years. Now, it only made you regret spreading the wonderful news.
The door creaks open and you try to pretend to be sleeping, but you know it’s not going to work.
Thorin always knew when you were lying and vice versa.
You listen as he removes his clothing and boots before joining you on the bed.
He wraps an arm around your belly and you instantly flinch. That causes Thorin to frown.
“My light? What is wrong?” he asks quietly and you can’t help, but let out a sob.
He instantly pulls you closer, whispering words of comfort into your ear.
After calming down, you turn to face him.
“I lost our child,” you tell him, not wanting to see the disappointment in his face, “I had a miscarriage. I thought it was just stomach pains but when I looked down, my underthings were soaked with blood. I went to visit Oin to see if he could do anything and he said he couldn’t.”
You let out another sob and Thorin pulls you into a hug, tears also clouding his eyes.
He was so excited to finally be a dad. He didn’t care about the sex as long as he or she was safe, but now he couldn’t have that. Did Mahal hate him so much that he would take this happiness away from him once again?
“I am so sorry, Thorin. You don’t deserve this. You deserve happiness for once in your life and I could not give that to you,” you tell him, brokenly and that only makes him hold onto you tighter.
“Non-sense, love. You have brought me all the happiness in the world. You keep me sane. We are going to get through this, together. You’re strong, love. You have to be. For me and our kingdom. Maybe it wasn’t the right time for him or her to be brought into this world and that is fine. We will try again and we will keep trying until we succeed. I promise,” he tells you, kissing your forehead. You both cry for the one life you couldn’t save.
Two Years Later
Dwalin breaks into the hall in a rush. “Mahal, Dwalin. What’s wrong?” Thorin asks, sitting straighter. “It’s y/n!” Dwalin cries out and Thorin stands. “Is everything alright? Is something wrong with the babe?” Thorin asks, dismissing his guards and follow his old friend out the door.
He prayed to Mahal that this pregnancy would run a smooth course and it had. Up until now.
“No she’s fine, but she’s giving birth,” Dwalin says and that causes Thorin to quicken his pace into an almost run.
He gets to your shared chambers quickly and Fili and Kili are waiting outside while Dis is next to your bed side, holding your hand. Thorin takes your other hand after placing a kiss on your forehead.
“You are doing great amralime. Just keep breathing,” Thorin coos and you nod, trying to take deep breaths. Oin pops his head up from under the towel. “Okay, y/n. I’m going to need you to push,” he says and you nod before he goes back under.
“One, two, three push!” he shouts and you’re doing as you’re told, pain shooting through your entire body and you’re getting close to breaking Thorin’s hand. So close.
You continue pushing until you hear a wail. You stop and breathe hard, waiting for Oin to give you your child.
He comes back up with a smile on his face.
“A beautiful prince,” he says, slowly and carefully wiping the baby off and cutting the umbilical cord. (I don’t know how this whole pregnancy thing goes so forgive me)
He hands you your son and you look down at him with a smile on your face.
“Our child,” Thorin says, kissing your forehead. You feel strange though. Like you weren’t done.
“Uh, y/n. I think you should hand him off to Thorin. It seems you have another child on the way,” Oin says. “What?!” you both explain, but the pain hits you again and Thorin quickly grabs your son from your arms.
You deliver yet another baby in ten minutes time and this one is another boy. You take your other son in your hands as Dis and Oin leaves after cleaning up. Thorin sits next to you with tears in his eyes.
“One was taken from us and now we are blessed with two,” he tells you and you let out a quiet sob. “Two wonderful princes,” you tell him, leaning in for a kiss.
“What should we name them?” he asks and you look at the babies in your hands. “I think that one in your hand should be called Frerin II and this one in mines should be called Bilbo,” you suggest and he looks down at the babe in his hand.
“Frerin and Bilbo. I like that,” he tells you, smiling brightly. Maybe Mahal didn’t hate him that much.
