06.12.17 L'Escarboucle En Amérique du Sud, au XVII siècle, les conquistadores espagnols donnèrent ce nom à un animal mystérieux -- mystérieux car personne ne l'avait jamais vu d'assez près pour savoir s'il s'agissait d'un oiseau ou d'un mamifère, s'il avait des plumes ou s'il était velu. Le prêtre-poète Martin del Barco Centenera, qui dit en avoir vu au Paraguay, le décrit dans son ouvrage Argentina (1602) simplement comme "un minuscule animal ayant sur la tête un miroir brillant comme un morceau de charbon incandescent". Un autre conquistador,Gonzalo Fernandez de Oviedo, associe ce miroir de lumière brillant dans l'obscurité -- qu'il aperçut à deux reprises dans le détroit de Magellan -- à la pierre précieuse qu'on supposait être cachée dans le cerveau des dragons.
