life update.
I’M GOING TO BE A DOCTOR!!
I just realized that at some point in the past 7-8 years on Tumblr, I stopped updating about my lifelong dreams and goals. And I just realized how little of my personal background and lived experiences I actually share. A lot of that is due to personal fears, but I’m also quite a shy and reserved person. However, in moments like this, I wished I had captured all of my emotions and thoughts along the way.
Despite every disadvantage my family and I have faced for the past 22 years in the US, my parents have never stopped sacrificing their lives and personal pride so that I may – one day – have a moment like this. In spite of all the odds, they have always taught me to use education as means to create opportunities. Somewhere between growing up in public housing and surviving against the odds of a neighborhood marked by gang violence and drug-related activities, I’ve emerged so far from home, and so close to fulfilling my own personal mission of creating better and healthier opportunities for those who are underserved and marginalized. Yet one thing that has always kept me grounded is remembering where I’ve come from, the bumpy path I’ve chosen, and the people who have impacted me in a million different ways.
I think what this moment symbolizes for me is not simply the measure of one’s determination or the reach of one’s dreams, but the opportunity to create something beautiful and hopeful out of an imperfect life situation.
This is the letter from my first medical school acceptance, and my top choice!
When I received this, I seriously laid in bed and ugly cried for a solid 30 minutes. Happy and grateful tears. People persistently told me how tough the medical school process was, but no one ever mentioned how humbling it would be at the end of it all. 8 years later... and my life is only beginning.
Although it’s been nearly a month, and with a few MD acceptances in hand at the moment, the feeling is still indescribable. I’m still deciding on my impressions of 2 other med schools and their financial aid packages, but I’m pretty sure I know where I would love to matriculate, come August.
In case anyone was wondering what I was doing when I found out I was going to medical school, the answer is watching power rangers
