Ouurhehhh ok so yes the focus on the romantic pairings in s2 is understandably kind of annoying if you were really drawn into the platonic bonds in s1 but I do fear that is the point. More arguments for this below the cut cause I got way out of control:
Like Lumon understands that the devotion and trust between the refiners is how they were able to coordinate the OTC and they are specifically undermining those platonic bonds from the beginning to the end of the season and NOT discouraging the romantic ones (actually ENCOURAGING them) because they are able leveraged in ways the non-romantic bonds aren’t.
They’re able to be used as an incentive they can dole out to Dylan and of course Helena is ostensibly using Helly’s romance with Mark to get more information out of him (she has her own double ulterior motives, we know, but that is why the board sends her down there, because Mark won’t work without her).
It’s also Mark’s grief for Gemma and the promise of not feeling alone anymore (through his innie’s relationship) that Milchick uses as the trump card to get him to return to Lumon.
It’s only Irving’s platonic/pseudo-paternal bond with Helly that reveals Helena’s deception, it’s his in-law relationship with Felicia (by extension her platonic relationship with Burt) that gets him the directions to the testing floor, and it’s Dylan ultimately choosing to not kill himself over Gretchen leaving him that allows the second Macrodat Uprising to succeed when he comes back to help Helly.
Also, Helly’s speech which rouses C&M makes no reference to Mark or love or whatever it’s all about Irving and his death.
Also also, it’s Devon’s platonic bond with Gemma that pushes them to investigate Lumon further (remember mark was not willing at first). Plus her “friendship” with Cobelvig that allows them to keep on pushing when Reghabi’s plan seems untenable.
You can even argue it’s only the platonic connection between Mark and Cobelvig that allows him to get a response (meaningful look + insane screaming + near vehicular manslaughter) that actually makes him question what’s going on and seek answers (that’s a real assbackwards perspective on it tho, I’ll admit)
You could call the platonic shit this season negative space, its absence is meant to be noticeable and meaningful, it’s not just a shift towards romance cause sex sells, you know?
