"What top redhead television comedienne has been confronted with her membership in the Communist Party?" Despite Lucy's claim that upon hearing this Walter Winchell blind item on September 6, 1953, she says (in the book Love, Lucy) "I remember thinking, 'Oh my gosh, do they think Imogene Coca is a communist?'"; Lucy was just interviewed by HUAC two days before. How could she not know they were talking about her? In the movie, Being The Ricardos, she did seem to know right away and it was Desi who suggested that they could be referring to Imogene. In Kathleen Brady's book, it is Howard Strikling who suggests they could be referring to Imogene, to which Lucy takes offense. Granted, Imogene Coca was as much a household name as Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz at the time. Lucy knew. Fortunately, Imogene Coca (1908-2001), a lifelong Democrat, was never in the cross hairs of the HUAC investigations. Your Show Of Shows, which was immensely popular from 1950 to 1954, won the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Series in 1952 and 1953. The 90-minute show was aired live on NBC every Saturday night in prime time. She won the second-ever Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 1951 and was nominated for four other Emmys for her work in the show. She won a 1953 Peabody Award for excellence in broadcasting. Her success in that program earned her her own series, The Imogene Coca Show, which ran 1954-55. In 1995, Coca was honored with the second annual Women In Film Lucy Award, honoring women's achievement in television and named after Lucille Ball. #lucilleball #imogenecoca #ilovelucy #redscare #beingthericardos #desiarnaz #williamfrawley #peabodyawards #emmyawards #red #comedienne #redhead https://www.instagram.com/p/CYCdlOwvafE/?utm_medium=tumblr
