I cannot be convinced that the reason Benji was taken by Lane wasn't because he was the easiest mark or the least skilled in close combat, but instead that Benji is the one Ethan reached out to.

Ethan peeked out the foxhole to contact Benji.

And then did everything in his power to keep him safe. Ethan demonstrated a level of devotion towards Benji and a need for him and his support.

He could have reached out to Luther, to Will, two agents with more field experience.

He seeks out Benji.

And Benji stays resolutely by Ethan's side. Despite danger, despite his own government tracking him.

A two for one painfest. Seeing BB Benji bound and endangered would devastate Ethan. Just as it would pain Benji to see Ethan in pain
