Back to school

This means new interpreters, new professors with different views on how to make accomodations. A lot of extra energy spent on making it work!

Also, new fun classes, classes I got to choose more freely and not just mandatory stuff, less basic and more hands on knowledge. Really excited to ger started on those!

Do you work as an interpreter??

Not currently, no! I just graduated with my bachelors degree in May, which was in the middle of this entire pandemic. I wasn’t comfortable enough to apply to jobs and work in a center or anything like that. Plus even interpreters who have been in the field for YEARS were only getting 3-5 jobs a week interpreting. In an 8 hour day interpreters can have anywhere between 1 and 4 jobs, depending on the length and intensity.

I’m lucky enough to have I’ve met through this program who I can sign with every day so I don’t lose my skills :) Same goes with Spanish. I have a few friends who are trilingual like me so we go back and forth between the 3 languages

I like to imagine that he’s a fellow interpreter and we’re working in the same booth. (FYI that’s how we look at job. Well, maybe with a little more clothes on, but still)

In The Hospital, A Bad Translation Can Destroy A Life

When patient and doctor don't speak the same language, it's not enough to have an ad hoc interpreter. You need an adult fluent in both languages — who can also cut through medical jargon.
