Grace really was the sweetest of them.
Their mother, Paul, and Louis all have such foul mouths. Grace is the only one who tries to be kind and gentle with all of them. She doesn’t judge Louis’ work, she doesn’t look down on Paul and only worries for his health, and she tries to sympathize with both their mother and Louis in their family grief. She even invites Lestat over out of innocent curiosity for someone her brother’s gotten close to.
He and Grace’s relationship downward spirals because she misses him and wants him to come around more, and Louis can’t explain why he doesn’t. (She lost 2 brothers that night.)
This isn’t to say she’s an angel, but out of the Du Lacs, she was the sweetest and most open minded. Which is why, of course, she’d try to hold onto Louis the longest. Keep inviting him to family events even when Florence doesn’t, invites him to hold Benjamin despite being absent for the entire pregnancy and never even meeting her first borns. She wants Louis back in their lives, she misses their family.
But this is also why her growing distance and then final goodbye hit Louis so strongly. One of the last good parts of his human life. As a vampire, he mourns Paul and Grace both. In different ways, but mourns them all the same.
