My take on Nolan's Odyssey
I think my favorite part was Tom Holland’s portrayal of Telemachus. Like there was an appropriate amount of edge lord but also was clear he was a Disney prince and a mamas boy and I love that!
I felt so bad for Helen I’m like fuck Menelaus that asshole also it’s been 10 years and you’re still being an abusive dick to your wife! You could have chosen not to go to war don’t give me that shit! Honor, fuck that you could have said i'm not getting my countrymen killed for "some whore" or something like that. I love how Tel kisses her hand like that’s probably proper etiquette and all but it also gives drank some respect women juice.
Also I didn’t like Circe being human and not having her nymph “daughters” around.
I did like Calypso not completely holding him captive and not entirely for selfish reasons but I still think she should have been a goddess.
And honestly I didn’t really care for any of Odysseus’s journey until he got home it was boring and dark but in a stale way idk like I know it’s war but still.
The Ithaca bits were all great
Also wish they included Andromache, Polyxena, and Helen jr.
I do like how they mention that Agamemnon has an ulterior motive for going to war
And Helen being like listen here you fucking asshole remember how your brother was killed by his wife for being a massive dick?!
Also didn't like Ody and Pen abandoning their boy, like i get he's an adult but like still
Also wish they included Anticlea's death and Odysseus reuniting with Laertes
no but imagine Chrysothemis having a chat with orestes about whatever and she just looks in the corner and theres Iphigenia sitting in a chair or something and everyone just forgot to make a big introduction about her return home
am i gonna hate the new odyssey film with all its inaccuracies and american accents? absolutely. am i still going to watch it and probably be insufferable in the cinema? definitely.
also, if anyone is looking for an accurate retelling of the Iliad, i heavily recommend ‘Iphigenia’ (1977). you can watch it on youtube with subtitles as it is in Greek with a completely Greek cast and is based on the Euripides play 😝
Is this anything?
Guess now is about time stop procrastinating on reading Helen + Iphigenia among the Taurians lol

Iphegenia and Polyxena are so similar just plot wise. They’re both young virgins who get sacrificed for good winds or appeasing someone. The Trojan War begins and ends w the killing of innocent lives. A bit more into speculation: i think the two have to gaslight themselves into believing this is the better way. Iphegenia adopts the “savior of greece” mindset and Polyxena has the much more tragic “its better than slavery.” They also both console their mothers that they’ll be alright and that their moms shouldnt be too sad or smth along the lines of that. Just something to think about.
