your tags on that post have me so !!!!!!!!! like YES you fucking get it!! and that also is a huge part of the reason why it bothers me now how (mostly newer fans) paint speak now out as “castles” and “fairytales” and for some reason just the color purple? like…..you’re missing it. you’re missing the entire thing.…..there is SOOOO much to speak now and you just don’t get it at all

no truly it is so !!!!!!!!!!!!! like speak now is a Deeply sad album, and i would honestly argue that its desperation to keep that sadness under wraps only for it all to explode in the follow up of red is an exact parallel to the midnights/ttpd dichotomy of emotions (even though both midnights/ttpd are speak now evolutions To Me, i can still fully see how important red is to understanding both of them, especially ttpd).

and tbh! if i may be so bold! i honestly think a big part of that common view of speak now is also the result of how so many people only commentate on her songs through the lenses of irl muses (read: men 🙄) and don't consider the deeper themes she's speaking to beyond that. like genuinely, the reason i am sooooo insane about the speak now/ttpd of it all is because i personally think that you can trace an identical storyline between both albums of a narrator being swept away in the empty but beautiful promises made by a muse that sees her more as a prize to be won and set aside than as a real partner, and the eventual fracturing and ending of the relationship, with all the scars it leaves behind, with the chronologically parallel songs between both albums being as follows:

i can see you = guilty as sin

sparks fly = fresh out the slammer

mine = the tortured poets department

ours = but daddy i love him

superman = i can fix him

innocent = my boy only breaks his favorite toys

haunted = down bad

dear john = the smallest man who ever lived

i think the narratives being told across these songs (and multiple other ones on both albums that don't necessarily have 1:1 counterparts in this chronology) is very clearly and plainly a parallel dynamic that highkey makes ttpd's narrative read like a textbook trauma reenactment.

but this might not necessarily jump out to many people because they are first and foremost thinking about each song in the context of "who" it's about, not what she's saying and exploring. since half these speak now songs aren't "about" the same person, they can't possibly be related or come together to tell a deeper and more nuanced story beyond just an intimate tabloid-style recounting of a celebrity's love life. on its surface, considering just the commonly attributed irl muses of each speak now song, the fact that the whole album doesn't orbit around one single man means that it doesn't tell as consistent and logical a "story" as albums like red, reputation, or ttpd, and therefore it's just more of a "vibes" album built more upon visual aesthetics than the depth of the actual lyrics within.

but who knows lmao. i just have a lot of insular bitterness over that element of this fandom dfsfds

An update:

So, @spymastersoundwave and I have finally moved to Portland. We both have jobs lined up, and are currently working on apartments. I managed to cover over two thousand miles in two days via driving, and saw beautiful things, though I couldn’t stop and take as many pictures as i wanted to. So, I might be a bit busy the next few weeks with settling with furniture and getting used to a whole new ass time zone.

But if there’s any nerds in the Oregon way? Let me know, and maybe we can hit a restaurant or something. Eventually @gowithplana will be following, but we’re basically the first grappling hook in our master plan.
