Iron pentacle trivet. c.1950 Iron broom trivet. c.1940 Found these two beauties yesterday while antiquing. Can’t wait to get some use out of them after I clean and restore them.

Next month is Pride month, a time where the LGBTQIA+ community around the world raises the rainbow flag and reminds everyone that we’re here, and we’re not going anywhere.  Most people that know me have seen me in apparently straight relationships, but that’s not the whole story. From an old journal: One of the deceptively simple questions my teacher asked us was “What develops your will?”

The fact that she asked threw me for a moment. So many teachers and authors TELL you what to do to develop your will. And so many of those “rules” seemed like an awkward fit for me, or seemed like they might not apply to every situation. Some of it seemed like nonsense, or like the 'how and why' had been lost and it was being repeated by rote superstition (“never eat beans”? Really?). Plus, I rebel against “Thou shalt not sin” commandments, and so much of the will-development work in ceremonial paths is tied in with morality, purity, and sin.

But what if I untangle all of that? What if I break it down to this most basic question?

Not what develops will in everyone... or what any particular tradition does to develop the will.  I don't need to concern myself with others' paths.  What works for me?

I've discovered a few things, through trial and error and observation.  And I am still learning.  

Develops my will:

mindfulness meditation

intermittent fasting

writing

exercise

spending time around high-will people

warrior pentacle

awareness of Choice

Softens my will:

watching television

consuming any advertisement-heavy media (radio, tv, magazines, newspapers, and for that matter, heavy-agenda news television like Fox News)

spending time around low-will people

skipping devotions or the gym

I periodically revisit the question.  Today I was inspired to take notes.  Perhaps I'll add things to both lists next time.
